Barrera was a shot fighter by the Marquez bout. He was still good enough to hang with him but Marquez still beat him quite solidly which just would not have happened five years ago. Would have been an huge fight...Don't know who would win?I'll say it again...
Sometimes being shot creeps up on you.
I saw Marco Antonio Barrera put forth a great performance against Juan Manuel Marquez last March.
His very next bout, against a Pacquiao who really did look less than his usual self, he looked atrocious.
I didn't see any indicators in the Marquez bout that would make me think that Pacquiao was going to run Barrera over, but he did.
Marquez though is not shot yet. Everyone has to remember that in the last couple of years he has dramatically changed his style from defensive counter punching master into an aggressive counter puncher. The first fight with Pacquiao, when afterwards he realised he wasn't the main draw annoyed him, and made him change up his style into a more aggressive fighter.
He has definitely lost a couple of steps in timing and speed. Most of it is due to fighting much more aggressive though. He is not shot and even his clinic over Juarez was not what it should or would have been five years ago. He would hardly have been hit five years ago and would have won every round even more convincingly.
So, in conclusion, he is definitely not shot yet but has certainly lost a bit of his incredible timing, speed, and stamina. He has one or two fights left I think. This may even be his last fight. We will see how he looks in it because at these lower weights time literally catches up with you overnight and you go from being great to good to shot.
Just look at the most recent case of Martin Castillo...He was an incredible fighter. He is now a shot fighter. No one would have ever thought he could possibly be KO'd in four by Montiel!!! He just didn't have it anymore. The skills of the little guys have to be much sharper to compete at the elite level. When you lose just that little bit of speed or timing against a still elite, prime fighter he will give you a whipping.Comment

I didn't see much evidence that Barrera was shot against Marquez. I thought he looked pretty good to be honest, but I might be kidding myself.Comment

Though Marquez won his fight against Rocky Juarez. If you really pay attention to Marquez when Rocky landed his shots on Marquez face you can see him holding back and just tightening up.
Where as before in his younger years, he'd take that flush shot and not even a seconds time counter punch.
I've said it before when a fighter like Marquez take a lot of punchs from a puncher like Rocky Juarez, "he wont be the same on his next fight after taking a beating" Marquez didn't take a beating but he took some brutal shots from Rocky Juarez even though Marquez did win, he knew he was in a fight. And if you watch that fight again, pay attention to how Rockys punchs stop Marquez in his tracks when Rocky lands his flush power shots.
I still belive Marquez will win.Comment

Yep man, I agree with you on the Juarez fight. I think you can actually see Marquez in a bit of pain a few times. Especially in one of the later rounds he gets tagged and you can definitely tell that he was in pain and a bit shaken. You're right that a fight like that can take it out of you as well. That may very well be his last great performance, but, you never can tell with a fighter like Marquez.Though Marquez won his fight against Rocky Juarez. If he can just stick to his old style he should be able to keep things reasonably calm and not get into too much of a fight. That would be the worst thing he could do, to get into a brawl, and although thats what most people probably want to see, I really hope he can stick with the strictly counter punching defensive style that he was so good at years ago (not that he isn't anymore, just that he has left that a bit lately) and take the fight that way.Comment

I defently want Marquez to win and i know if he boxes Pacquiao he will win. But part of me just wants to see Marquez go to war with Pacquiao, which he can do, and beat him at his own game as Morales once did. That would be great. But i'll be satisfied with him winning at any cost.I think you may be kidding yourself lol
