There are several ways that Ricky could have increased his tiny chances. One key is to have forced the fight to be at 140 lbs. For these reasons:
1) Floyd Mayweather has been operating in a comfort zone. He has not had to "make weight" in many years. Floyd has actually weighed in under the fight limit in all of his recent fights. Not even having to dry out a single pound on fight week. Against Oscar, Floyd had a big breakfast on friday and weighed in at 150. Then, he was 148 on fight night.
And we all saw the videos where Floyd was eating potato chips while doing situps.
Ricky should have tried to take Floyd out of that comfort zone by forcing the less-strong fighter to further weaken himself by drying out. Ricky, by contrast, is accustomed to the weight fluctuations.
2) The gloves. I'm actually surprised that there has been VERY little discussion on this topic. By moving the fight to 147 in Vegas, they go to the bigger gloves. By NSAC rules. That does two things: takes some power out of Hatton's body shots, and gives FJSMJ additional protection for his brittle hands.
I watched the Collazo fight yesterday. Forget the knockdown. That was an off-balance thing. Hatton never hurt Louise. Despite landing some very clean shots. And that was a bigger Ricky than we'll see on 12/8. I think he was unaccustomed to the 10 oz gloves.
3) The WBC gave Joy a pass on the 154 fight. It was not a defense of his 147 title. If Floyd had to go to 140, they probably would have stripped him of the WW title. Ricky doesn't/shouldn't care about the WBC WW title because even if he beats Floyd, can he really defend it? Can Ricky fight Margarito/Williams/Cotto? And if he beats Floyd, his fight with Oscar doesn't NEED a belt. He would be like Pacquiao - a fighter who transcends belts.
Those are my thoughts. Please weigh in.
Side Note: After re-watching the Collazo-Hatton fight, I am even more certain that Ricky will be punished.
