Calzaghe’s promoter Frank Warren has started negotiations with Hopkins’ representatives, Golden Boy Promotions, owned by American boxing icon Oscar De La Hoya, for a possible £10m Spring showdown in the States.

The 42-year-old veteran brawler has refused point blank to travel across the Atlantic.

But breaking America’s big-bucks market is a huge lure for Calzaghe – not just to bump up his coffers, but confirm his legacy as one of Britain’s greatest fighters.

Two of New York’s most famous arenas have been cited as possible venues, but Calzaghe cares little if it’s Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Gardens or Hopkins’ back garden – all he wants is a fair cut.

“Hopkins says the purse must be 60-40 in his favour, but that’s not fair,” said Calzaghe. “Especially if I’m expected to pay to repair the damage he says he’ll do to me!

“Boxing is a business so any deal must be fair. Just for his ego I’ll allow 51 per cent to 49 in his favour.

“I must get what I’m worth and anyway Hopkins needs me more than I need him. I could fight Kelly Pavlik, Roy Jones Jnr or Antonio Tarver, but Hopkins is the one that I want.

I'd rather see Calzone fight Jones or Pavlik, honestly. Bernard is going to make sure the fight is slow and ugly. It will be huge, but the action will be pitiful. But, Hopkins deserves it more than Jones or Pavlik right now, so if it gets made, it gets made.

I say let Hopkins dictate terms to a degree, but after Joe puts Hopkins to bed early i dont want to hear ANY excuses, NOT NONE - ZERO - ZILCH !

Its an act of negotiation mate, Joe has alway call the shots thats why most of his fight have been in the U.K, people like lacy and kessler NEED Joe not the order way round so they had to choice but to listen to his terms, In this one B-hop doesnt need joe but joe NEED b-hop..Simple, If he beats B-hop he calls all the shot in a rematch, Roy jones NEEDS joe so if they fight joe calls the shots...Thats how it works.

The good news is that they're squabbling over, in relative terms, peanuts. Sounds very much like its a done deal.

Gotta love Calzaghe's quote regarding taking 49% to suit Hopkins' ego.

I don't understand this Yankee Stadium business. Why even say that? Hopkins couldn't fill the 4000 seat Mandalay Bay events centre in a P4P vattle with Winky Wright, how's he going to fill a 70,000 seat stadium against a "eurobum"?

                  but still:
the source of the "$16 million" is not known!!!!!

I would love to see Calzaghe fight B-hops, but i don't it will do Calzaghe any good. If Calzaghe loses he is done, if Calzaghe wins everybody will say that B-hop is old (what he is !!!!). Calzaghe can make his legacy other ways!!
