Hopkins: "I'll Hand Calzaghe His First Loss"

Lets do some very simple math.
Lets say Bernard throws 30 ppr (punches per round)
Lets say Joe throws 90 ppr
Now lets say Joe makes twice as many mistakes as Bernard.
90/2 = 45 ppr
Joe throwing 90 ppr is the equivalent of Bernard throwing 45 ppr assuming the parameters I laid out.
45ppr-30ppr = 15ppr = Joe > Bernard by a 50% margin given the parameters established in this example.
In essence, Joe outworks Bernard. Simple Math.
90/2 = 45 ppr" I mean are you serious?! Not clinching when he might need to is a mistake, fighting in close is a mistake, not moving when he needed to can be a mistake, keeping his hands too low is mistake, throwing careless punches, leaving himself open for counters is a mistake... I could go on and on
Judges also look for ring generalship, effective punching, Defensive skills (let's not forget Willie Pep one a round without throwing one punch), etc. etc. along with work rate. This is the sweet science... not easy mathComment

Do you know how wrong your calculation is? Do you know how many variables you just ignored in doing this calculation. I would agree that the younger, more active Joe may out work Hopkins. But first of all, like everyone said, Hopkins has a way of nuetralizing his oppenents' strengths. He could tie up joe, smother him, fight dirty, etc. It would be ugly but effective. So we're not sure if Joe would be that active against B-hop. Secondly, errors are not limited to punches: "Now lets say Joe makes twice as many mistakes as Bernard.
It's hard for me to discuss boxing with you guys if you don't even know who willie pep was. I thought this was an axiom by this point, anyone that knows boxing history knows about that feat.
Let me suggest some reading for y'all

that should put y'all up to speed.Last edited by DuttyAlacrity; 11-06-2007, 02:19 PM.Comment

does anyone seriously think b-hop can still be dominant against ayounger, much faster opponent? bh would be what, 43 by the time the fight comes round and simply wouldnt be able to cope with jc pace, i cant believe people are taking this one seriously. it should of happened five years ago when jc had the opportunity to swallow his pride, go to the states and take the smaller cut and face hopkins or jones, he decided not to so will always have that question mark over his head. congratulations to joe on beating the best opponent of his career at age 35.Comment
