by technicality- the round has to be given to somebody no matter how eneventul or unspectacular. Not every round can be scored even. Guys that fight like that, it's like they're are exploiting the rules. Boxing is not and never was supposed to be that.

This is coming from a fan of a sport where the purpose of the sport is to cause temporary brain damage to the other guy. A sport where guys die in the ring, or are often disabled from competitive injuries.

There has been a shift at some point in the definition of boxing. It may be the MMA-ization of the sport.

I have never seen a Willie Pep fight. But I heard he was great. Everybody has heard the story about how he won a round without throwing a punch.

Do you think it's the influence of UFC that has changed the focus to violence over technique?

Possibly, I think Floyd's style is pretty good, if he was to use more power, I think it would make him less fast and would leave for more error. To me a fight of technicality is pretty much as important as a fight with two power punchers. Both styles need different aspects of the sport. I think the new generation has been mostly influenced by UFC. When they see free fights with a lot of action on spike, then once in a while pay $50 to see Floyd play it safe for 12 rounds, I just don't see how that can catch their attention. Mostly hardcore fans appreciate Floyd's style.

If Floyd Mayweather fought in the 80's with his overly conservative style he would be on the other end of alot of descision, prior to that as well, it's only as of recent that guys like Mayweather can get away with this because the media champions them.

He'd never get on TV or in the major press or be championed with that style in years past. If he did he only be a fringe character on undercards.

No I disagree, however I see your point and accept it.

I love boxing for the sweet science, which is one of the reasons that my favourite performance of all time was Calzaghe Vs Lacy. No knockout power, just pure technique, and the taming of an (alleged) beast.

However, I do feel that PBF would be more exciting to watch just knowing that at any point he could just explode and have a mad power punch destroying anything in it's path, blocked or unblocked.

Before you say it, I am aware I have contradicted myself by citing the Calzaghe Lacy fight as a fave of mine, but I would love Calzaghe 100x more if he had the ability to just **** out of the blue.
