Just annoys me, because I see it as a change to protocol thats all.
I don't think Taylor was actually down yet. Watch it again, the ref steps in then Taylor goes down.

Taylor is trying to stand up, and the corner is also holding him up, he was in a really dangerous position and basically his head is wide open to clean shots at the end.

Taylor doesn't go down until the ref actually steps in.

I'll have another look tonight and see if I can spot it. Again, thanks for the comments.

IMO, that was a textbook example of when a ref should stop a fight. Note, Taylor crumbled to the canvas AFTER the ref had jumped in. Smoger did the right thing and showed again why he's one of the best in the biz.

I might see if I can get a fight. I might be able to fulfil my lifetime ambition of creating a Stephen Hawkins.

It was over. Taylor was done. He couldn't defend himself. Those last two uppercuts put him on ***** Street. He didn't even bother putting his hands up.

The reason Pavlik was given a chance was because he went down on all fours. And he was visibibly still conscious. His legs weren't there. But he recovered.

And the main reason was when Kelly smelt blood he went for the finish. Taylor failed to put Kelly away with wild shots that only tired him.

Thats another good point. People don't seem to realize that.

It was a good stoppage, steve did the right thing, BUT had it been a reversal of fortunes and been Taylor down in the 2nd and Pavlik TKO’d in the seventh (stopped the same way), you know half the board would have been screaming terrible stoppage….

These are my 2 cents on the stoppage. I think any other ref would have done the same. The reason it's 'controversial' now, is that the ref who made the stoppage was Smoger. He has a history of letting guys fight and giving them opportunities to come back. Since he has done it in the past, most fans expected him to do the same here.
But imo, Smoger may be softening up a bit (and not that it's bad or good, but he's changing his style some); He was quoted as saying that he was a second away from stopping the fight after Pavlik was hurt and taking shots. I think what saved Pavlik was the fact that he was actually throwing some shots back and had his hands up attempting to defend himself. Still, had Smoger stopped it, it would have been a bit out of character for him. In taylors case, being held up by the ringpost and not fighting back and taking shots...basically out on his feet...is what forced Steve to stop it. I think had Taylor gone done (or been able to go down, if he was in fact held up by the ringpost) I PRESUME Smoger would have given him one more shot at survival if he beat the count.
Nonetheless, I think any ref would have stopped it, maybe another ref would have stopped it when Pavlik was hurt (that Vanilla Ice dance he was doing had me thinking they would stop it), but for Smoger's history of officiating fights, some feel its contorversial. I'm not one of those and I still think Smoger is the best in the biz (think about how many fights he has officiated that have turned out to be some of the best fights of that particular year). And while I like both fighters (personality wise...stylewise, Taylor had become a bit of a bore though admittedly he was GREAT in this fight), I was rooting for Pavlik, not because of the color of his skin, but because I felt Taylor had becoming a bit more arrogant of late and was in a bit of denial in regards to his performance of late.
Anyway, it was a great fight, no controversy imo and looking forward to the rematch!

                    lol what the hell?

Was Smoger supposed to hold Taylor up underneath the arms and let Pavlik beat on his unconscious corpse?

When you see a guy's shoulder's slump down in the corner, he's out.
