  • Rooting for a fighter based on skin color is racist

I've really noticed among my friends and a lot of people on this board that they root for people based on skin color. why is that? i appreciate black fighters (taylor, mosley, clottey), white fighters (pavlik, hatton, wlad), asian fighters, latin/ hispanic fighters. all my friends wanted to root for pavlik because he was white, and i just didnt get that. i was rooting for taylor (more for manny than for taylor, but i do really like taylor), but wasnt upset that pavlik won. it was a great fight for so many reasons (not PPV, both fighters hit the canvas, big punches).

race is still an issue because we allow it to be. ****, in the latin/ hispanic culture racism is based upon country of origin. With everyone oppressing each other the man doesnt have to get his hands dirty.

    How is that racist?
If somebody can root for one fighters because they're from the same country as them, why can't someone else root for another fighter based on the color of their skin?

There's only two colors that really matter anyway - black and white.

The others don't mean much of anything.
They're just different shades of black and white.

True, oh so true. It shouldn't be that way but people allow it to be. I wanted Jermain to win the fight to end the criticism but I wasn't pissed that Pavlik won, I know he is good for boxing. Most fans back a fighter because of race and others just because they are countrymen. However, not all fans are that way and they have a diverse list of fighters that they back and support, color should not make a fighter one of your favorites, skill will and how you percieve him to be as a person should shape your allegiance.

I think the having pride in your race or cultural backround is healthy, but where people go wrong, is hating someone from another. Or thinking that yours is superior in anyway. I have a Whelsh backround so I've got a special spot for Joe C. but that doesnt stop me from enjoying the sport of boxing and one of the greatest things about boxing is the many cultures of the world that it brings together. And then watching them beat the **** out of each other

            I rooted for Taylor...

But I bet on Pavlik... Had nothign to do with color for me..

I just knew who's style would actually win. Even though It wasn't the answer I wanted it to be.

Am I the only one that thinks this thread is directed towards WLAD?

it's racist because you are basing your decision/ favor on color (i say color because race isnt even a real thing). i believe that would be pretty close to the definition of racism. a fighter should be admired for his skills in the ring, not a completely arbitrary thing like skin color. it's not like anyone worked their ass off to be white or black, they were only born that way. it's neither a pro or a con, it just is.

It's not necessarily a terrible thing, but if race is all someone sees I think it's pretty shallow. There are more things about a man than his color. I like Wlad for being smart, Oscar for being so damn good-looking, and Hopkins for reppin North Philly.

Isn't that the reason girls liked Oscars. Are you hiding something from me my friend?
