And, I don't disagree with this post, either. Skills hit the nail on the head here. Overrated? Oh yes. Probably not the MOST overrated, but definitely not the Jack Dempsey the hype made him out to be.

his opponents were not amazing, he defended his title 5 times in 6 years, he did NOT dominate all his opponents other than the ones that were lousy, a good percentage of his oponents were complete bums, and his record is far from flawless.

he knocked out teeth and broke bones because the refs back then would allow anything to happen to the fighters, Jess 'Im a skillless cowboy that started boxing in my 30s' got up from his knockdowns in completely unfit condition and was allowed to go on because of the rules back then, and got demolished cause of it. one thing i will give Jess though, he had great stamina for his size and a ton of heart.

what exactly is Dempsey's best win? I give Dempsey credit but there are MUCH more deserving people when it comes to the top ten Heavyweights of all time and especially top 20 fighters p4p...

Jack Dempsey was America's first sports "superstar." He's an historic figure in the sport. He's definitely in the top 10 heavies of all time. He had a number of great great fights. But, perhaps his most famous win, was not an official win....when he knocked out Gene Tunney in the famous "long count." I'm not the only person to see Demsey in such a light. Read Ferde Pacheco's book on the all time greats.

** Since you failed to provide a rating and then show how they are overrated, well then, this thread deserves a Zer0 rating at best or less in an honest world.

personally, I could care less about how popular Dempsey was, that doesnt mean anything when it comes to rankings! Otherwise De La Hoya just got bumped up the pound for pound lists.
Dempsey definately was a huge sports icon though, and I absolutely give him a HUGE amount respect for that.

and Tunney would have gotten up even if the count wasnt long, but it IS a question if he could have survived after that. Personally, I think he could have, because if he really wanted to he could have just taken another knee the second he got up again and it wouldnt have mattered because they didnt have the same point system back then anyway...so he would have won the fight anyway imo...but we can really never know, so there will always be a question mark in that fight in my mind.

but when it gets down it rankings are all opinionated anyway...

Fair enough. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

yeah, Tunney was clearly coherent for most of the infamous "long count" as he was sitting up and waiting for the official "9". He was a brilliant fighter and used everything to his advantage, a smart move a great deal of fighters could have possibly saved themselves with. By most accounts, Dempsey was the one who insisted on the corner rule for some reason and he was the dumbass that forgot about it; he has no one to blame but himself. Other than that one combo, Tunney boxed circles around Dempsey in both fights.
