There's very little debate whether Mayweather is considered to be the current best PFP fighter the game today. Question is...what does PBF need to do to bring his popularity to the level of Delahoya to bring in a larger fan base?
Mayweather's popularity

Nothing... he has built his marketing strategy on pissing everyone off, so people will pay in hopes that he will lose. De La Hoya made fans by being the nice guy, exciting fighter... that's probably why their fight sold so well, because almost everyone likes Oscar, and almost everyone hates Floyd. -
From an economic standpoint, there is no difference between popularity, fame and infamy. Oscar should never be the economic benchmark. He is an aberration.
Floyd is the most talked-about fighter of 2007. Just take a look at the list of threads.
Floyd is making in excess of $40 million for two relatively easy fights.
I think he'll be fine.Comment

Heck no..DLH is the GOLDEN BOY...He was two nations behind him...Pretty Boy, only those who can accept grestest likes him...His fan base is big but he can't hold a stick to the Golden BoyComment

Comparing anybody to Delahoya is like comparing somebody to Michael Jordan or Hank AAron. Economically, of course. Not skill-wise. Because Oscar was never the best in the sport.
But Oscar's numbers are so off-the-charts, that you shouldn't use him as the measuring stick.
That's like saying that Kobe or (Dwyane Wade) sucks because he isn't Jordan.Comment

You can't compare something like that, Floyd is pretty much the benchmark for ppv sales of anyone not named dlh or tyson. Those two were at a totally different leauge. That being said the Mayweather/Hatton sales will say alot about floyd's marketing strategy as of now.Comment

Dunno about the States, but here in Toronto Canada people dont really know who Mayweather is....I mean casual sports fans.
Actually people will drop Klitschkos name more often then any other. And actually I hear Zab Judahs name a lot...Comment

Nothing will bring his status to that of De La Hoyas in terms of Making him more popular, keep winning and without REAL HONEST debate, and keep talking ****. He's too into that theory now anyway, to quit. People either love that he talks SO much **** and back sit up, or are waiting to see him get his ass kicked, and put their faith in certain opponents they feel can do that ass kicking.
Whether they are wrong or right isn't important. He makes them hate him so much, htye refuse to believe he will beat the guy they pick to beat him. Either way, love or hate, 9 out of 10 times, you're willing to pay to watch him either do what he does best, or get his ass kicked. Perfect strategy for now.
If he picks up a loss along the way, watching him build himself up and the fans who feel sorry for him will only add to his popularity. he justs CAN'T get blown out. That's what he needs to worry about.Comment

i know floyd is playing into the trash talker, etc.
however that might work great for him now but i believe in the long run its going to hurt him...probably after his first loss (so long as its not a close decision) but if someone comes along (ie. hatton, cotto, etc.) and basically makes floyd look really bad then the trash talking isnt going to help him in the long run.
now if floyd would back up all that he says i dont think so many people wouldnt like him. i know i'd like him better if he backed up what he said but now when he talks trash it just makes me want to see someone light him up in the ring and show him he isn't all that.
and right there is how even if you dont like his attitude you still want to see him fight, to lose...
so its a good marketing strategy...if you think about money.
however its going to hurt his reputation in the end (when his career is over...especially if he gets beat clearly in the ring) because he will be remember something similar to a school yard bully that was all bark and no bite.
i've heard that if you know floyd on a personal level he's the exact opposite of how he is when it comes to boxing and i think he should have been himself instead of trying to pretend to be the way he is.
i read the acticle (and forgot which family member said it but) they said something to the effect of: floyd is one of the nicest type of person you could ever meet but he puts on this, "i had a rough life, im a thug" type of persona when its not true. floyd never had a hard day in his life, etc. etc.
if he was real (instead of being so fake) many people would like him more.
im not saying no trash talk is what it should be because lets face it, we all like to hear some trash talking...i even will be happy with non-stop trash talking (like floyd does) BUT you HAVE TO back it up...and thats not what floyd does.
he said he was going to "stop oscar in the fight" when in reality he didnt even give the effort...
thats no good.
but right now his "gimmicks" are working...but if he wants to be remembered as a great or become a great and have his name put up there with all the amazing boxers in the history of the sport then he has to do a few things:
1. Fight anyone and everyone from now until he retires (make it to where no one will ever doubt he could win against whoever from this era because he fought all the top competition)
2. If you're going to talk trash...BACK IT UP!!!...there are greats who talked trash but did everything they could to back it up...2 examples: tyson, ali. but he cant talk trash and then get in the ring and do nothing about it. it makes him look like a little immature 13 year old brat who needs a good backyard ass whooping.
3. dont disrespect people (he stole oscar's gym bag apparently before their fight) and said he has, "no respect for oscar as a person or a fighter". that is BS. you cant act like a little prick all the time.
he needs to grow up if he wants to be remembered in a positive way.
thats all just my opinion for the record.Comment
