My mother knows who Floyd Mayweather is. She might very well know who Beckham is too (doubtful though). Then again, it was my mother who told me when I was 5 years old that I couldn't play soccer with my friends because "soccer is for kids that aren't good enough athletes to play real sports".

Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan is a better example.
Michael Jordan is possibly the best example, Basketball being something that isn't played much in Britain. Jordan was a product of marketing by Nike, as Beckham is also a product of marketing in the US. But Beckham is the biggest name in sports worldwide at the moment. Stars in US sports are usually not even on the radar abroad. As an example someone like Figo may not be a big name in mainstream US sports but he'll be instantly recognisable by many European or South American immigrant populations in the States. By comparison an American Football superstar such as Peyton Manning wouldn't even get recognised if he stood in his QB gear in the middle of Covent Gardens. There hasn't been an American Football player with international recognition since William the Refrigerator Perry.

to be honest the rest of the world isnt as fascinated with stats as americans..so its rare to have sprints timed and given to the press..and then posted....but rugby players come in much larger sizes then that...please dnt cry...its just me voicing an opinion..please dnt think im belittling you..or your country....r american fotball...dnt take it personally buddy.

if you want to know about sizes of international rugby players..let me know..im sure i can dig out sum impressive info for you...the guy u mentoined..he would look like an average rugby player....in his stature....you wouldnt go...OMG wow..look at that guy..he's a beast!

anyways...i think thats that..but once again..no more tears yes?..big girls dnt cry...remember that

In North America you play it wrong. Football is a violent and tough sport, played mainly by police officers and convicted criminals who relish the chance to stick the boot in to each other on a Sunday morning.

Hell, I can do that. I bet Shawn (who is on steroids, btw) can BP a lot more than that.

Calvin Johnson is 6'5, 238. He runs the 40 yd dash in 4.35 seconds, and he has a 43" vertical jump.

No athletes can compare to NBA or NFL players.

Absolutely agreed. I remember that I used to wear my Romario shirt, and people would routinely ask me "who's that?".

thats that small minded american outlook on the world once again.....soccer players..not good enough to play real sports?..yet its virtually the natoinal sport for the majority of other countrys in the wrld..the most watched and played sport in the world..but cause the americans are not very good at it..its not a real sport...typical :-)

Being big and being able to run doesn't make someone a great athlete...a rhino is big and strong, and can run fast, but isn't smart enough to play sports.

There are different demands on a rugby player, because you're on the field for sixty minutes non-stop. You get a short break on the half hour mark. Playing rugby league requires endurance for long periods of fast running interspersed by sprints, so while you won't often find a rugby player making sprints quite as fast as Merriman it isn't a requirement in the sport.

                    This fellow is quite impressive:

                    5'8", about 178 lbs.

The 400 was from his college days. I'm sure its more now. I always find Brits to be the funniest people I talk to. Their "soccer hooligans" (the guys who watch the weakest sport in the history of the world) are considered tough to them.
