Tiger Woods or Michael Jordan is a better example.

But P&B are DELIBERATELY trying to make themselves into pop icons. They are half-naked in this month's issue of W magazine. They had a HUGE party with Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Will Smith and Jada. This was a highly orchestrated launch of the David Beckham "brand".

If Tiger Woods went to England and posed naked with Elin in Tatler, and gave lavish parties with Jordan, Robbie Williams, et al, don't you think he'd develop a massive UK following?

But Floyd was smart and his first ppv, and his following ppv's were extremly succesful, and far more succesful than Cotto's.
His first PPV did 350k buys.
How many did Cotto's first ppv do?
Mayweather was well known for years before his first PPV - he was a titleholder back in the late 90's...Cotto was relative new on the American boxing scene when he had his first PPV, so it's not a fair comparison.

Mayweather won his first title in 1998, yet didn't have a PPV until 2005.

In a couple of years, Cotto will surpass PBF's popularity and do bigger PPV's because he's exciting to watch, he doesn't run...

More people in the US know Posh from the "****e Girls", not Beckham from playing soccer. Trust me, people in the US don't give two ****s about Beckham, soccer, or any combination of the two.

Americans play rugby, we just call it different names. Its usually played by young kids when there isn't enough to get a game or football going. The athletes playing football are probably the biggest, toughest SOB's in the world. Rugby players are tough, but they really don't compare.

David Beckham is a handsome guy and a fashion icon. So even if he doesn't make a splash in the sports world (which he won't - had you even heard of the Los Angeles Galaxy?), he will continue to be a gay icon, and extremely popular with women.

That's a bunch of ****. Call your mother right now and ask her about David Beckham. Then ask her about Floyd Mayweather. To the latter she'll say "who?" And the Beckham news has dominated the mainstream press in America. Every Galaxy game is now on ESPN. It's almost bigger than Barroid Bonds.

                  Rugby players are tough. Certainly.

But in terms of athletic ability, they are several notches below NFL players. The American sports fan is turned on by athletism. The wall-scaling catch. The flashy dunk. The 500 foot homer. Americans need that SportsCenter moment. It's just the way the US media works. Unfortunately.

Beckham, however, can't carry Ronaldinho's gym bag, Becks was MAYBE the fourth best guy on his own team.

well of course now, beckham is not as good as he used to be, plus he had the injury in his leg, at one point in his career he was considered the best player in the world by many. and he took the media by storm, his wife made her own TV show, now hes a household name in USA.

lol...tough?..it was a couple of weeks ago..tehre was a rugby player from new zealand who was having headaches...he went to the dctor...didnt know what was wrong with him..so they had his head x-rayed..and it was found that he had an opponents tooth lodged in his head..and he had been walking around for months without even realising...u see its actual physical contact...head to head, shoulder to shoulder, arm to arm..not pad to pad, helmet to helmet...thats like saynig if a boxer wore a helmet into a ring n boxed...he'd be tougher then one who didnt..they are very similar sports..expect its not so stop n start in rugby..and its more free flowing...and quicker (hence why i think its more exciting)....but the knocks u take in american football are watered down because of the equipment/pads/helmets used...so you saying they are tougher...doesnt really hold much water....maybe they are tougher..but they need to prove it by gettnig rid of the pads n helmets...n running into a 6'11 monster of a kiwi at full pelt....
