When you only have a handful of guys in a certain sport, the public is going to love them. Take Lance Armstrong for example. Its hard to find an American who doesn't like him. Why? Because Americans, for the most part, don't give a **** about cycling and he was winning, so why not support him? I imagine its the same for Hatton. There aren't a lot of boxers to like from Britain, so you kinda ride the wave of the guy who is doing well.

My guess is that boxing is the number 3 (?) sport in the UK. Behind football (soccer) and dental care dodging.

In the US, boxing has become largely relegated to a fringe sport. You have (US) football, basketball, baseball, NASCAR, hockey, golf, etc. And MMA has cut into boxing's fanbase. many of the younger fans think MMA is more interesting.
Soccer, cricket, rugby, motor sport, tennis seem more popular than boxng in the UK. When I was over there I met zero boxing fans and the mainstream media coverage focused on those sports i listed. It's a fringe sport like in the US but gets more exposure on this side of the Atlantic.

Hatton: England as Cotto: Puerto Rico.

But is that enough if they don't build strong fanbases in the US. Trinidad did. Cotto hasn't. Yet.

Cotto's PPV shows have both had disappointing nums.

I was joking. Thus the 'dental care dodging' comment.

But I'm a Lewis Hamilton fan. He got me. I'm on that bandwagon.

Holy **** that is lame. Cricket? Tennis? Soccer? Somebody cue the music for "I'm proud to be an American" lol. Brits really need to start looking into playing American Football.

I have never played or seen cricket, IDK anything about it, but what's wrong with tennis and soccer? hate it when people criticize another sport when they probably don't know squat about it.

Cotto's fight with Judah had good PPV numbers, considering he's only become well known the last couple of years. Mayweather has had a high profile in the US for a long time, having been overhyped ever since his Olympic bronze medal win.

PBF has had lots of advantages, such as being the nephew of another well known boxer, and unconditional support and positive coverage from the American sports media. But Cotto's a much more exciting fighter, and in a couple of years will likely surpass Mayweather in PPV numbers.

put it this way. boxing doesn't have as much attention as it use to in england. without local famous boxers, then we wouldn't care about the world. aslong as we have our local guys fighting on the world scene, then it will help everybody in terms of getting fans. to tell you the truth, even some boxing fans won't have seen mayweather fights in england.

i am not american so i dunno if he got many fans there.
