I always thought Rahman was a poor champion. He got lucky against Lewis and then, in the next fight, put in his place. The only thing he had going for him was a solid punch- but he was slow and akward. You're right- people were riding him at the end there -but not me. The people that were giving Rahman credit for being solid should see Maskaev as having a better chance against Peter. To me, though, Oleg had to work hard to beat someone whom he had taken out with more ease the first time around. In the first fight he looked sharper - his age was just too aparent to me. Honestly, if Peter's youth and strength can't help him bully Oleg- pressure him until his age makes him crack- I'll think less of Peter.
Maskaev Vs. Peter Winning Poll

I'm picking Maskaev to win this - he's a much better boxer. Samuel Peter is strong and has a good chin, but he's both physically and mentally slow.
My only concern is that 38 year old Oleg may be injured by Peter's illegal and dangerous rabbit punches - I hope we have a good ref for this one, that will put a stop to it and deduct points.Last edited by Steelhammer86; 07-25-2007, 07:58 PM.Comment

I saw Maskaev earlier last year and asked him what he thinks of Peter and if he is going to beat him. His response was "we will see"
I mean I didn't expect a "Hell Yeah!" out of him, Maskaev is a very humble guy.. but his voice really lacked the confidence

That's too bad to hear, he needs every bit of mental confidence to even have a chance with Peter.Comment

Yeah. The very last thing you want to hear is that a boxer who is about to face a high pressure fighter is lacking confidence or mental toughness. If bulky, stout Peter is going to be in Oleg's face all night- stepping forward non-stop, iron-chinned....well...if Maskaev doesn't have confidence in himself he could crack and throw the fight away by losing faith in himself. Being unsure against a pressure fighter can only lead to two things : being outworked because you turn too defensive, or getting frustrated mentally, having a lapse, and getting knocked out.Comment

As we all know, Maskaev is probably one of the best hw boxers at....getting KTFO!!!!!
So the hard hitting(and chinned) Sam Peter should have no problem at all. However, I am concerned that this long layoff(it will be 9 months) may affect Peter and hope he's been staying in good condition. Worst case scenario, which in my mind is very possible, is Peter comes into this fight overweight and very out of shape which could lead to a very hard loss...

Let's not forget Maskaev has won 12 fights in a row...whatever weaknesses he had years ago, he improved on them.Comment

Maskaev has never turned down the fights other boxers have dodged. He's learned alot, and probably has fought hurt a couple of times. He is the Cinderella man of this generation, you'll see.Comment
