what more does Williams have to do?
    Paul Williams has two problems:

    1. he's black
    2. he's not from a big-market town

On the point of him being black, I'm not saying it as a racist but merely as a statement that black people don't tend to follow their fighters like other ethnicities out there (Pinoys, Mexicans, Brits, Puerto Ricans). Most PPV buys come from the base the fighter has, unless he's an exceptional name like Mosley, PBF, and ODLH. Other great fighters out there do not have the drawing power of these fighters because they're born as black-Americans. Case in point: Jermain Taylor. He's beaten BHop twice and tied with Winky but his PPV numbers, and attendance outside of his home-town vecinity, are very low. The same goes with Cory Spinks.

If Williams were Mexican, British, or even a Pinoy, he'd have four times as many followers wanting him to fight the bigger names. He's lucky he got a fight with Margarito to begin with (which I think should've vacated his WBO strap and fought Cotto straight on).

But Arum talks about the best matches available. What is better than a Unification bout?

        Well stated.

Of course Cotto's not going to fight Williams. First of all he'd slaughter Williams in a boring, ugly fight. Second of all Cotto is a star, Williams is not. There's no reason for anyone to fight Williams until he wins a few more.

Immediately after the fight, Arum said a rematch between Margarito and Williams is in order, adding that he was thinking about Shane Mosley as the next opponent for Cotto. However, at the post-fight press conference, Arum said he would not abandon Margarito, and is still considering the former WBO titlist as an opponent for the popular Puerto Rican.

I bet more people want to see Cotto-Mosley than Cotto-Williams.
I for one would like to Cotto-Mosley with Williams deserving the winner. One reason we may not see Cotto-Mosley is that Mosley is with Golden Boy. I know they have resolved their differences but I'll believe it when I see the matchups between the two companies.

Being black and from a small market really doesn't matter. Unless you have the actual PPV buys breakdown by ethnicity, your assessment isn't correct. In this country We tend to follow the big fights regardless of race. I agree you can break down a fighters fan base by his race (for example: Trinidad,Cotto,Paquaio and Hatton-nationality)but when it comes to PPV in the USA a good fight will always sell regardless of race. Being black isn't what is going to hurt Williams. It's the way he's promoted and marketed and his style. Most of the top guys aren't going to want a long rangy guy that isn't going to stand in front of them. Also, Floyd is from Flint MI and Pavlik is from Youngstown OH. Small markets won't hurt either of them. Pavilk will be a success because of his fighting style alone. Look at Gatti.

Yet there is a star studded resume by Margarito (who is was willing to fight)?

Gatti was only popular after moving to NJ and adopting it as his home. When he fought out of Montreal, nobody cared about him.

As for Floyd, he's only a big name because of those he's fought. He was smart enough to fight guys who had a loyal fan base and pick up their fans as his fans.

How many PPV buys do you think Winky-Hopkins is going to get? I will almost guarantee you that a Cotto-Mosley fight would generate 3-4x as many PPV buys as this fight will generate. My best guess is 120K PPV buys, if they're lucky, and we're talking about two all-time greats who are first-ballot HOFers here. But, they're black and blacks don't follow boxing as they follow other sports (NBA, MLB, and NFL). Hispanics, Brits, and Pinoys follow boxing almost as much as soccer, as long as the fighter a good fighter from their country.

Zab is a very talented fighter from NY, a city of over 8M people, yet he can't generate PPV buys, even with his popular, crowd-pleasing style. Why is that? Because he's black!
