As I once heard said about soccer in the USA..."it's the sport of the future and always will be".

Soccer rates behind baseball, football, basketball, golf, tennis, local bowling shows, and whatever else is on...
Even hockey is a third rate sport thse days.
It is an illusion that it is growing in this country...it's just that it is the immigrant population who attend, watch and play the sport are here in greater numbers.

As for Beckham...who ever is paying him all that money, good luck to him.
If you are a fan of the sport, you will go see him...if you are not...do you care?
I don't believe he is going to create any new fans.

So to answer the question...soccer is probably more popular, but that's not saying too much.

There are three at ***ham alone (Bocanegra, Dempsey [who was signed in the spring], and of course McBride).

Bobby Convey at Reading, played every game to get them promoted but was injured for much of their first EPL session.

Tim Howard and Brad Freidl, but of course we've always been strong at keeper

Jay Demeritt was one of the first names on Watford's sheet every week.

      Cory Gibbs was at Charlton

Marcus Hahnemann at Reading (another keeper)

Jonathan Spector has been around and is currently owned by West Ham I believe

The Utd. striker Rossi is really a Yank and played over here, although he opted to play in the Italian national program instead.

      Beasley just signed with Rangers

Eddie Johnson is rumored to be signing with a Championship squad.

Oguchi Onyewu was somewhere in England for a bit last year.

Now that little Freddy is 18 and can get a permit, he'll end up in Englan before year's end most likely. He wants to go to Chelsea but Jose isn't interested. SAF has had him in for training and is interested.

He played for Newcastle Utd for four months but it didn't work out, he's gone back to Belgium.

This is funny because I was actually going to make a soccer thread today in light of the whole Beckham thing. How big is he in England compared to Hatton? I know he's famous on a whole new level but whats it like? Are all of you guys huge soccer fans and even moreso then boxing?

As for the US stuff I say no way. No one cares about Beckham. He's getting his shine now but thats just because the hype. I think he's more of a media star then a Soccer star over here. They just want to see his Wife and all that other stuff. I do think people will tune in for his first few games but it wont last long. Also, isnt he past his prime? He also was never one of the super elite anyway, right? I know he's the most popular but never been considered as a #1 guy, right?

I do think he could have some effect on little kids wanting to play and that might have some effect on the next generation but not us. Even when he came over here last time no one cared. He didnt play or nothing but they made a big thing over here about who he was and they were asking him does he think he could make Americans care about Soccer. Really, he was gone before he could even answer. It will never pass Baseball, Football, or Basketball over here and it will be lucky if its ever even 4th

Boxing is not dead in America. We have tons of great fighter and regular coverage on at least four cable networks. There's never been a better tmie to follow boxing in the U.S.

That's right. I was stretching on a few names, but I did leave off my main man Claudio who just finished a respectable career in English football (with stints in Scotland and Germany as well). Claudio is playing out his career in our domestic league. he's still good enough, but he's 33 or so and has had too many injuries.
