I'm from Louisville where Ali is worshipped and lots of people here think he's a hypocrite for skipping out on the war. So your religion lets you beat people up in the ring and nearly kill some of them (Ali was sadistic plenty of times in his career), but you won't fight for the country that made you a star? I'm not sure what the motivation of Maskaev is so I'm not going to rush to judgement. But if this is more about money than it is about being afraid to fight Peter then I think Maskaev has to realize that despite the fact he has the belt, Peter is the draw. Therefore if it is a 50/50 split then frankly that is the best he is going to do. Even if he fought Vitali Klitschko I'm not sure the split would be any different and I'm fairly sure if he fought Wladimir he would get the low end of a possible unequal split.

What is confusing is the fact that he has the opportunity to make a lot more money if he does take this fight. If he was somehow able to beat Peter it would give him more legitimacy in the division and then maybe he could in fact get a bigger payday with a fight against Vitali or possibly a Wladimir unification. But if he gets stripped of the title he has to fight his way back up and I'm not sure if that is the best choice at his age.

If this is in fact about fear then there really is no need to comment on that as it speaks for itself.

Either way, Peter deserves this shot and Maskaev should do the right thing here.
