Mayweather: "Hatton Won't Take The Fight"

  • The fight could go on PPV both sides of the Atlantic. HBO sells the rights to Sky or Setanta who then sell it to the public. It all makes up part of the same available TV revenue. So yes, Hatton's ability to sell the fight in the UK is a relevent issue when discussing purses.

That aside, he had HBO viewing figures of 1.3m for the Urango fight, 1.8m for Collazo and whatever for Castillo. That would indicate that there's plenty of people interested in watching him in the US, even more so after Saturday.

Do you really need it explained as to why HBO would put a fighter who's new to the US market on for free in his first couple of fights? Look up the term "loss leader".

He doesnt have a big fan base in the US, otherwise he would be Pay Per View there.

HBO PPV covers a larger auidience than Sky, america is a bigger country with more people and more money to be made.

Otherwise why would hatton sign with HBO?

If hatton is a big draw in the states, why do HBO make him free to air and lose money for themselves??

Because they probably dont think his fights would do major PPV numbers in the US.

And quit with the patronising talk.

Those numbers prove people will watch him for FREE, it doesnt prove they would PAY to watch him fight.

Yes the fight will go PPV both sides of the atlantic, thing is, if hatton wasnt fighting a known name by the US public, the americans wouldnt buy the PPV, the brits would, and money would be lost.

      Example.

If the hatton urango fight went PPV both sides of the atlantic, i reckon it would sell out in britain and flop in america.

Its that simple, he doesnt have a huge fan base in america,

Friggin JOHN DUDDY went US PPV (not hbo tho), why?

Cos he has a marketable irish fan base in the US, which they tried to get for hatton, by impying he had irish roots lol.

It doesn't prove they wouldn't either. I'd like to see some of the viewing figures for other "free" HBO fights for comparison though.

HBO obviously believe Hatton will go PPV in the US which is why they've funded his first 3 fights on "free" tv. If you think 205k in the middle of the night is poor then you should check out Floyd's non-DLH sales. They're appalling by comparison given the size of the market he's supplying to.

It's yet to be seen if the DLH fight has had any effect on Floyd's ability to sell so you're overstating and assuming his relative strength in the US market but people booing him and leaving his fights early doesn't sound that popular to me.

Floyd's non DLH hoya sales are nowhere near appaling, so before i end the convo at this point, i shall try and find dios domincano's list of the biggest selling ppv's, mayweather is on that list several times i believe.

              I'll save you the trouble.

Judah did approx 400k, the others mid to low 300s. To a market 5 times the size of the UK's. At peak viewing time. Appalling, as I said.

                • Those number's just show that they'd be better off concentrating the PPV revenue on the UK and showing it at prime UK viewing time, even if the fight is staged in the US. It would easily sell 600k+ in the UK.

I tell a lie. They also show that 400%+ more people wanted to watch Tyson's shell fight McNeeley than want to watch Floyd against anyone not called DLH.

They also show that Floyd can do bigger numbers than Manny Pacquiao, Erik Morales, Bernard Hopkins (non de la hoya), de la hoya himself, Lennox Lewis etc.

Once again, Floyd's numbers are not appaling, no way.

And why the hell would they wanna concentrate on selling PPV in the UK instead of the US? makes no sense, america is bigger, there are more people to sell the PPV to, otherwise why is hatton on HBO?

Sorry, name me the Last UK PPV that did Numbers of 2 Million???

                    • And by the way mayweather PPV cost more than Hatton,

No wonder hatton does well on santanta

Santanta were selling the Hatton-Castillo fight for 15 bucks lol.

Mayweather fights are $54.99 are they not?

                      lol.
