Leonard fought Duran's fight because Roberto did a first class head job on Ray and pissed him off to the point where Leonard was fighting with anger instead of a clear head. Duran knew what he was doing the whole time: It was calculated. This isn't an excuse for how Leonard fought or a swipe at Duran. Whether people like it or not the psychological battle is a part of boxing and kudos to Duran for winning that particular battle. It's a part of the game and it's a mistake to leave it out of your calculations.

What he said also. Remember the press conference. Duran hated guys like Leonard. He hated everything he stood for. He would have a heyday if he were to ever fight Floyd Mayweather. Mayweather wouldn't have the balls to stand and trade anyways, however.

Funny thing is, even THAT was calculated by Duran. He worked himself up into his "El Cholo" role. Away from boxing he was one of the nicest guys you'd ever meet; as Ray Leonard found out when they filmed a commercial together. Duran treated Leonard like they'd been best friends for years.

For the rematch, Duran wasn't in fighting shape and is confirmed by Randy Gordon so I give Ray as much credit for winning that fight as Lennox lewis for beating Oliver McCall due to a nervous breakdown in the ring. For any of the leonard fans who are dissatisfied with the results of the rematch because of Duran's walking away, i say to them the rematch didn't have to wait nine years.
Theres a difference between voluntarily fighting the wrong fight, and choosing to fight instead of box, which i believe Leonard did.

          As for comparing Leonard-Duran 2 and Lewis-McCall 2, i strongly disagree.

But u have made me want to watch all these fights again, so thank u for that.

Leonard- in every aspect of the sport.

Sorry, Roberto. You were good- but not that good.

Thanks. I chose it to showcase the Cholo's snarling-beast demeanor... Your avatar's pretty cool too; the Brown Bomber's one of my all-time faves.

Leonard said the second fight wasn't that big of a deal, and pretty much no one says that their third fight meant anything.
The third one is virtually non existent, when do you ever see shows like hbo and such talk about the third one, it is pretty funny to me actually.

                      Side Note:

To Boxing fans in general (and Duran fans in particular), sports journalist Christian Gaudice's book pictured below is highly recommended reading for an inside look at one of Boxing's most fascinating characters.
