Merchant Brought Substance, Eloquence and Honesty

By Charles Jay - Whether it is voluntary or not, Larry Merchant will soon be leaving his role on HBO's World Championship Boxing. His contract, which runs out in June, will not be renewed.

It seemed inevitable, as Merchant appeared out of place in an atmosphere where intellect has found itself going out of style. Be that as it may, Merchant was a welcome constant, in that he was thoughtful and thought-provoking in his commentaries. For those who appreciate neither of those qualities, he had diminished appeal, so naturally you will hear the chorus of fans opining that this moment was long overdue.

Could it be something he said?

You bet. And most likely, something that somebody didn't agree with. When you're around for as long as he has been, and you have the temerity to voice an opinion that may not constitute the pursuit of safe ground, that's going to happen sooner or later.

The question is not - nor should it ever be - whether you or I always agreed with him. After all, what person of genuine thought and conviction would ever ask you to do that anyway? I didn't always sympathize with his point of view, but I could appreciate his presence in an overall sense, and that's what is most important. [details]

hey at least he will call mayweather vs dlh i really dont want larry to leave even though he just puts out the flame in the fight with his lame quotes,
but he has been great during his tennure as an boxing analyst....

this is what i wondered.....could it be ..........
larry merchant of course works for HBO right ?
he always calls HBO fighters along with jim lampley and emanuel steward right ? is true Larry Merchant always makes negative comments about their own fighter could it be because of that interview he did to floyd after the baldomir wipe-out ?????

man i really hate larry but i wouldn't watch a fight and not hear his voice, it would take a while for me to get use to it,
i hate him but i want him to stay to call hbo fights

they really spoke bad about floyd the whole fight, i hear it and i can't bellieve it....If an HBO fighter is winning or losing the same network commentators should not dis-credit the fighter....could it be ?

Shoot. I forgot about that. That's awful news for me. And they're replacing him with Max Kellerman?

Great. Now Max can tell us how Miguel Cotto is Clubber Lang and Zab Judah is Apollo Creed.

Cause Roy'll be like, "You see? They fired him because he never boxed before."

Some of Merchants quotes are questionable but to call his quotes lame is ******ed.. the majority of people who do, are missing half a brain. Sure he is no Plato or Socrates when it comes to philosophy but he gives a different flavor to boxing comentary. I will miss Merchant, I'm sad he has to go...

nice read. i agree with it for the most part. kellerman is a nice guy, and tries hard, but he doesn't add much to the show. he's likeable enough, but there is very little substance or wit to anything he says. normally when he makes a statement about the fight, it will be something that had already occured to me 20 seconds ago. merchant really threw you for a loop sometimes, but he also would add a different perspective, and always had the kind of undeniably honest opinion that often goes along with an old, gruff, cynical journalist. in this censored, politically correct world, being able to count on hearing that kind of honest opinion (whether you agree with it or not) was very comforting. kellerman is a nice guy, eager to please, and not nearly as interesting to listen to.

I like how he always had some metaphor or clever line right before the bell started the first round.
