Job well done
Yeah, Larry said some weird and funny stuff at times, but he adds a different flavor to the cast.
I think Larry, Jim, and George are a team with great chemistry calling the fights, probably the best on the best network (HBO).
He's done well compared to commentators of the past.
I'm sure someone will post Larry's famous quotes and one-liners.
I'll start with one:
"If he leaps, he sleeps", Larry quoting Kevin Kelly's trainer on what would happen if Hamed jumped in with his punches.
It was a good ride, Larry. Best of Luck.Comment

Merchant is classic. He tells it like it is and that's that. I wanted him to actually tell Frank Warren to get the **** out because the interview was for Joe, not Frank. Nobody likes you, Frank!
Here are some great Larry Merchant quotes:
“Follow the wisdom of the great actor, James Cagney, you hit your mark, you look the other guy in the eye, and you tell the truth.”
“There are too many governing bodies. They're all corrupt. I think they have replaced the old Mobsters with the kind of 'corporate rule' of boxing.”
"Calzaghe not only schooled Lacy, but he flunked and expelled him"
"Chris Byrd has two punches - pitty and pat."
"Samuel Peter comes from the old school of swing in case you hit something"
"Naz says that when he fights he has music in his head...whatever it is, i dont wanna hear it"
At a Christy Martin fight:
George Foreman said "She is like a Raging Bull"
Merchant "You mean a Raging Cow George"
After the Forest - Quartey fight:
Vernon Forrest: "First of all, I would like to thank God for my victory..."
Larry (interrupting): "You ought to thank the judges."
After the Vitali - Johnson fight: "That whale was just harpooned."
I think I'll leave it at that for now. Feel free to add your own quotes.Comment

****** move by HBO,and there gna replace the great Larry with Max Kellerman? This guys a Rocky Balboa fan, always talking about it like its real life,Max Kellerman is a joke
I remember last time Pavlik and Zertuche was having a war in the 3rd and 5th round, the crowed where going crazy, and Max said " But does he have enough excitement to be fighting Edison Miranda next, will people wanna see it? "
This guys been watching too many movies,i hear his favorite all time fight was Balboa vs Creed I & IIComment

You know Jim, I was at a deli the other day and a man came in and ordered what he called a "#5". he wasnt an abnormally big man, roughly average size. anyway as he waited for the sandwich I couldnt help but recal a fighter by the name off Nicholas Welsh. who fought back in the early 50's and is most know for his wars with Mickey Jones one in which they actually fought a 15 round draw IN THE RAIN ahha, maybe sometimes we might miss the finer points of the athlete, but tonight... Cotto was that sandwich,... JimComment

larry merchant is the man, i am pissed that they wont renew his contract. i will support the guy wherever he goes... he's great, its too bad more people dont appreciate him.
he's hilarious and without it him its just going to be a bunch of jim lampleys trying to hype up a fight.
the other commentators are just really biased, i think larry is the only one who says what he really thinks on air... as crazy as it might be.Last edited by mexpwr915; 04-20-2007, 04:46 PM.Comment
