Europeans have been taking over this sport for awhile. I'm not even european, I'm American and I noticed this
I just watched the following Calzaghe fights one after another:

Oh and Colin McMillan.Oh British fighters? There's always competition between British Boxing and American Boxing and it's very close, you could argue Britain has had the more extreme talent in the last 20 years with Herol Graham, Nigel Benn, Chris Eubank, Naseem Hamed, Joe Calzaghe, Ricky Hatton, Amir Khan although America does boast Nunn, Whitaker, Toney, Jones and Mayweather I suppose!Comment

What because there are some Eastern European heavyweights and all that? Give me a break.
Europe needs to be sunk, say "I" to one of them and they'll probably say "robot".Comment

OK - lets look at facts.
Jones fought Hopkins for the vacant IBF title.
Both were up & coming contenders but Jones was the more polished fighter at that time, & that's what won him the bout (Hopkins with his late start didn't reach his prime until a few years later - Jones was just about starting on his).
In a pretty boring fight, where neither fighter was willing to commit in the first 6 rounds, Jones edged more of the rounds with slicker skills, although neither guy landed much at all.
Hopkins started boring his way in after the 6th, & started doing some occaisionally effective work on the inside, with Jones tying him up & throwing flashy looking pretty meaningless combos on occaission. A few solid punches landed by both guys, but they were very few & far between.
Jones better ring generalship & flashy combos edges a pretty boring bout (3 points on all the judges cards - about right), although I might of edged Hopkins on the slightly more effective punches landed.
---
Jones pretty well dominated a half-dead Toney, & probably would beaten Toney at his best.
Toney's a master counter-puncher with superb defensive skills, but Jones would give him very little to work with - speed & angles a little too much for Toney on any day I believe.

Fights at Super-Middle with all fighters in their prime.
Calzaghe against Toney
Would give a solid edge to Joe in this one.
Toney's was undefeated before meeting Jones, but only in the record books. Was awarded a split over Dave Tiberi (22-2-3) which was so bad that an investigation was called for. The 2 judges that gave it to him weren't even licenced officials.
Also had some dubious scoring in other bouts.
RE: Calzaghe match: Toney was a master counter-puncher but he was best when guys came straight at him. Calzaghe throws lots of punches, which Toney likes, but not from the kind of angles that Calzaghe gives.
The southpaw stance would be a problem as well - Toney won probably his biggest bout against southpaw Michael Nunn, but he basically caught a tiring Nunn late after being totally out-boxed for most of the fight. Calzaghe has a great chin as well as incredible stamina.
Calzaghe by a close but solid UD, as long as the judges are neutral.
Too many punches from too many angles, probably not that many landing cleanly, but Toney not catching Calzaghe enough in return.
Although Toney lands the cleaner shots when he does land, they're not enough to make up for Calzaghe's volume & business in the bout.

Calzaghe VS Jones
Slight edge to Jones in this one
Think that Calzaghe's southpaw stance, combined with his speed, work rate & angles will give Jones problems, but think his reaction time & his ability to throw incredibly fast shots from outside then move will give Calzaghe slightly more.
How would Jones react when Calzaghe most likely keeps coming after Jones lands a good shot though, throwing a high volume of shots from angles Jones isn't used to seeing.
Enough to edge a close bout, I believe.
Close UD for Jones, with his slicker outside work & movement pulling it off.Last edited by macman; 04-14-2007, 12:05 AM.Comment
