The Miguel Cotto Question

No way Cotto goes back to 140. He was draining himself TOO MUCH! He will be fine at 147. Watch in June. Its going to be a tough fight, but I can see Cotto winning this fight.Comment

He is popular in the state's. I'm a fan of him, his style is entertaining and again you can count on 1 hand how many other fighters have had as many national TV big venue HBO fights as he has had in the last 2 years. He headlined at Madison Square Garden his last fight on HBO.Last edited by The Troll; 03-28-2007, 08:56 PM.Comment

The fact that we get so many posts in this forum(positive or negative) two months before his next fight shows that he is well on his way to becoming a superstar. Yes he has flaws, but most fighters have them. Having flaws does not mean you cant become a superstar. We can all agree that Gatti was a superstar and nobody can deny he had plenty of flaws, starting with his defense. Cotto likes to trade and most of Cottos fights are very entertaining; with most of them ending up in a knockout, and people like that. Also, the mere fact that he can be beaten/knocked out compels people even more to watch his fights. His style is very appealing and even if/when he loses a couple of fights, I think he will win enough BIG fights to become a star.Comment

You shouldn't compare Cotto to Gatti. They're not comparable at all in skill level or in style. People I think are low on him that he didn't stop Urkal but Urkal is a very game opponent that's awkward and the kind of fighter most US based top level fighters would want nothing to do with.Last edited by The Troll; 03-28-2007, 09:58 PM.Comment

I really wasnt comparing Gatti and Cotto. Was just responding to a couple of posts in this thread that said Cotto wasnt gonna be a superstar because he was flawed. And my argument is that having flaws does not impede a fighter in becoming a superstar, and I used Gatti as an example. I agree with you that Cotto is a much more skilled fighter than Gatti; but like I said, in no way I put Gattis name in my post to compare the two.Comment

Addison you seem like you want someone to sell you on Cotto? If you don't enjoy his style thats OK but just cause you dont like his style and he hasnt faced any super star caliber fighters doesnt take away from his achievements and his potential. Look at PBF, ever since he left 140 he has been fighting has beens or guys that are hand picked for him(except Zab, even tho he and everyone else who knew boxing had him figured from round 1) I can't stand his new I run away as fast as I run my mouth boxing style but I can't deny he is great in his own respect. At least with Cotto he goes out and puts it all on the line trying to constantly impose his will and game on people, constantly trying to break his opponents down. I mean he hit urkal with some body shots early on that made my insides hurt and it was pretty obvious that Urkal and his trainers were looking for a way out once the headbuts and backpedaling got old. You want to speculate on someone's ability lets talk about Cintron and losing all of the momentum he gained, Let's talk about Chico and how much he will have left or add to the welterweight division if he proves himself worthy. Let's even talk about why Floyd jr has chosen to "retire" instead of proving he's the goat as he loves to think. If he was half the champ he thought he was he'd be planning on fighting Cotto, Mosley, Hatton. Cotto has and continues to prove the stuff he's made of just watch his fights and enjoy the mixture of smash and destroy he always brings.Comment
