Economics has always dictated who fights in boxing.

Before WWII, the majority were "White" fighters.

After, better economy led to better employment elsewhere.

This is why I always bring the ***ish fighters as the lead example:
When you think of ***ish people, you tend not to think of them as "Fighters", yet knowing the money was in boxing, with few opportunities elsewhere, the ***ish fighters made a big impact on the sport prior to WWII.

During their fighting years, the many ***ish fighters knew the importance of taking what you could from boxing before it took you.
There were a number of these fighters that retired before they were shot...taking the money and going back to college to become Doctors, Lawyers, Bankers, opening up businesses, etc.

Very good program called "Duke It Out" {***ish Boxers}, shows from time to time on ESPN classics.

The many "white" athletes, like many others, prefer to play in other sports where money is more guaranteed.

with the exception of hatton and his soccer fans selling out a stadium.....Boxing isnt a big draw outside US and also time changes become problematic for fighters whio are accustomed to US times. And the reason for the lack of white fighters is simple.... Boxing has forever been a poor man's outlet from a bad-poor neighborhood. Thats why in my opinion blacks and mexicans are thetoughest fighest of the past. this is not a racist statement but if you go to any neighbor in the suburbs chances of finding a boxing gym are little to none. vs going to a poorer area in a city and you' will find plenty of boxing gyms and clubs.

The threadstarter makes a good point. IN the past the best U.S. fighters would go abroad and take on the world's best. Today's American fighters lack the ambition to do that. But to be fair, they don't need to financially. They can fight handpicked opponents twice per year and fight only in their own backyard.
