Why Is Hatton Obsessed With Mayweather?

This is what I could find:
Manchester boxer Hatton told BBC Sport: "Madison Square Garden is the mecca of boxing and I've never topped the bill there. That would be an absolute dream.
"But the show is put on where the money goes so he may have to come over here."
Hatton, who took the IBF belt from Kostya Tszyu in Manchester on 5 June, added on BBC Radio Five Live: "I want one more fight before the end of the year.
"I'm taking a break now and when we find out who we are fighting I'll get back in training."
Hatton's father and business manager Ray is still considering a number of offers to stage the WBA and IBF world champion's first transatlantic title defence in late April or early May. "The Mayweather fight has been on the cards ever since Ricky beat Kostya Tszyu," he said. "And if someone came along and said 'Here is the Mayweather fight' we would take it.
"We are very close to finalising a deal for his next fight now, but what we do know is that Ricky is going to be fighting in America in either April or May."
"It is all about going over there and, I hope, introducing Ricky and his personality to the American public. Pay-per-view is the goal, but ideally it would be good to have a couple of fights for people to get to know him.
"If a big fight was out there we would take it immediately. But Ricky is only just 27; he is younger than the other champions and he has got time on his side."
Hatton explaining why the fight never took place:
In an International Press conference held yesterday, Ricky Hatton was told that Bruce Trampler of Top Rank, Mayweather’s now former promoter had said that Ricky turned down a fight with Mayweather at least twice this year and that he would not be facing him this year. Hatton was asked if this was correct?
Here is what Ricky Hatton had to say on the subject:
RICKY HATTON: Well, me personally it wasn’t done but I mean I can’t be speaking for their – you know for my team or – to be honest this year it would be ****** to admit with a fight with Mayweather because I have so many problems with – problems outside the ring where my father promoted (INAUDIBLE) obviously we were sitting trying to do a deal with HBO.
I was in negotiations with that when my current promoter and he’s my new promoter, you know, from Artie Pelullo, Robert Waterman and Dennis Hobson. He was who had the court case with Souleymane M’Baye was claiming (INAUDIBLE) fight. There were so many things going on and it’s been difficult to – you know to basically get on with the fighting so to speak, you know, with the negotiations.
But I think the sensible thing is, you know, I’ve – I don’t think that when I come straight out of England and fight in the first time in America and fight Floyd Mayweather, you know. To be perfectly honest with you I think that would be a ****** thing to do.
I mean for instance Floyd Mayweather, you know, said on many occasions a few years back he would come to Manchester and he would fight me in front of me own crowd and he would knock me out and do all this crap what he’s been saying and now he’s all of a sudden decided – seems a bit cautious (INAUDIBLE) and don’t – during – over the last 12 months he didn’t want to come to Manchester.
So, you know, if I was going to be (INAUDIBLE), you know, maybe he don’t want to fight me. He said he was going to come to Manchester now he’s changed his mind. So I’m not inviting Floyd. Floyd’s not inviting me. You know and I had a lot going on in the last 12 months but me and Floyd will get it together. So I’ll fight everybody once but I think – you know I have not fight in the United States for a number of years now so I think it’s important that I’ve done my deal now with my new promoters and we’re with HBO and we know what direction we’re going.
Hopefully the court case with my (INAUDIBLE) promoter with (INAUDIBLE) – will get squashed and the case with Souleymane M’Baye and then you know we can start looking about positive things like a fight with Mayweather but it’s a been a difficult 12 months for me and ...
I mean I’m not saying that, you know, my feet have turned down a fight with Mayweather it may be that (INAUDIBLE) answer for them but there been a little bit confusion, you know, over lately what me team would be. You know, I’ve just only just recently signed with HBO and Dennis Hobson and Robert Waterman of Fight Academy and Art Pelullo of banner Promotions and it’s nice to know what direction you’re going in.
I think you need to know what direction you’re going in before you can make a decision like on a fight with Mayweather.Comment

FF: Floyd Mayweather has said several times in the press in recent months that you demanded 13 Million dollars to fight him. Was such a fight ever discussed and can you comment on the validity of his statement?
RH: I don’t remember saying that exactly, but it was probably something in that region. I think it’s a mega fight worth a lot of money, but that end of it is really up to my father and my team to negotiate. I think it’s a fight people really want to see because people know Floyd moved up to welterweight without fighting the Lt welterweight champion. I think a fight between he and I could be one of the biggest fights to be made in boxing.
This interview was in 8/24/06. One of the several times a Mayweather vs. Hatton fight could've happened. This was after the Collazo fight which would've been logical.Comment

So whats the problem then? Again you seem to be complaining about the past, the fact that he has priced himself out of the fights in the past (something that you dont really know the extent of. You dont know that the deal offered to Hatton wasnt dreadful). So what is your problem with him now, when the time is obviously right for the top guys to face each other, for them talking about facing each other. Hatton is talking about Floyd no more than Floyd is talking about Hatton. So let them talk about each other, let them fight and stop whining about it.If Hatton wants to turn down the fight for whatever reason, I have no problem with that at all. Many fighters do the same thing for whatever reason. But the thing is Hatton is saying this is the fight he wants, it's a dream match for him, and that he feels he would beat Mayweather. He has said this in a number of interviews. When you're saying that, then it makes absolutely no sense to turn around and price yourself out of the fight or flat out turning it down. Hatton needs to shut up until he's ready to step up...Comment

The past? This is the present and I still see Hatton talking about Mayweather in every other interview and I still don't see a contract signed for them to fight each other. So whats the problem then? You're absolutely right, this is the perfect time for them to fight. But instead of making the fight just 3 months ago, Hatton chose to face Juan Urango and now Castillo. He sounds like he wants the fight, but his actions clearly show he doesn't. I wish the guy would talk about his next opponent more than a guy he never intends to face...Comment
