Exactly, Peter fought the perfect big man fight & never let Toney get on the inside. I thought Toney looked in great shape but I couldn't tell you if it was stamina that made him less effective or the fact that Peter didn't give him enough of a target to fire combinations at, but like the Kid said, time catches up to us all. I also think the weight had alot to do with it, JT just couldn't let go of that dream of being a HW champ, can you imagine if Toney had picked a weight like supermiddle or cruiser and stayed fit he'd have been a force to recon with.
Did weight training ruin Toney?

you guys need to put it to a rest....i cant believe his antics ( which werent real) acutally effected people, it kinda makes me laugh when i think about it!! you guys are fools and ive said it before, it doesnt matter what any of you haters say....hes top 10 dead/alive and a future HOF...no one has ever done what he did!Comment

He went up to heavyweight and fought quality heavyweights. Ezzard Charles, Sam Langford, Greb, Mickey Walker, Billy Conn, Joe Walcott, Fitzsimmons...numerous guys did it.
Don't make it sound like James Toney did anything unprecedented with his career. He's one of the greatest fighters in the last 20 years, and that's something, but don't try to make him out to me something he wasn't. He's no top 10 or even top 20 PFP all time.Comment

How many times has Toney arrogantly stated that he doesn't use a strategy? This is a big part of his problem. You can deal with someone better if you know their tendencies. That's why the oaf lost. Peter was coached on how to deal with him. Imagine if NFL teams didn't do this. You'd never have successful franchises like the Patriots, who live off exploiting a team's flaws or potential flaws week in and week out.Originally posted by Floyd RI could be wrong but it seems he spent more time conditioning with Billy Blanks than he did working on boxing strategy with Freddie Roach.Last edited by Haglerwins; 01-11-2007, 11:29 PM.Comment

Well, if your genetics deem that your built to be, at most, a cruiserweight, then massing on more than that would definitely be detrimental, as we have seen .I think that if Lights Out were to drop back down to cruiser (I know, it'll never happen, but if he DID) he'd rule the division.Comment
