    Did weight training ruin Toney?

I have read that he had never done weight training before he started to work with Billy Banks.

Toney is and always has been lazy. Even as a middleweight. Weights had nothing to do with it.

I don't think Toney is the guy who over trains.

Yes, he was almost ripped for Booker; that wasn't lean muscle that you get from boxing training.

Toney is larger than life, as such, he's been very good at having people believe that he's a real player as opposed to the reality that he's a 38 year old guy with a lot of miles on the clock fighting at a totally unnatural weight class.

People can't say that he's going to take care of business one minute, then when he looks bad, oh well, at least he didn't get knocked out.

It's just the end of the road for the guy. He's going to be one of the most recognized and revered fighters because of what he's done when it comes to the years after his retirement. Why Larry Holmes all that by sticking around for no reason?

i think that there were signs of weight training affecting his performance.

for one his hand speed and countering abillities, they were crap compared to the first fight with peter. weight training slows both of those down, some more than others, some people weight training is good, in a reaction type style like toney's it did more harm than good.

two he gased easier than normal, even when toney was a looser flabby bastard in the last fight he seem to have more gas, lifting weights isnt for stamina so much as it is for weight gaining and power, it helps with bursting power, but that's overall body strength.

i think that if toney did implement weights in his training that it hurt his overall performance and took away from his natural born talents, actually his strong points, especially being the smaller guy.

Doubt it was the weight training. People who incorporate weight training tend to get FASTER when they incorportate is INTO their normal program, not as a replacement for something else. He's just lazy. Besides, he could very well have trained for increased strength and stayed at about one weight. Mass=diet.
