Nobody is questioning Cal's skills and abilities...because that would be ridiculous. But that whole "Cleaning the division out" is all great and cheery. It doesn't change the fact that his biggest win was over Lacy, and next biggest a washed up Eu. He's a really good fighter, but I don't think we should be referring to him as a "great" fighter simply because of his past accomplishments as well as the fact that he's still undefeated. He hasn't fought a Huge marquee name outside of the Eu, something he needs in a Hopkins, Jones, Tarver, etc.

His biggest wins are Lacy, Sheika, Brewer and Mitchell, followed by Woodhall. The Eubank fight was like a nonety because of the circumstances, and Eubank wasn't even a name in America let alone a marquee name in America.

So no, Calzaghe has not had big wins outside of Lacy, or big fights outside of Lacy, but that's why he's so under-rated - he's beaten lots of very, very good fighters (albeit non-marquee names) but not done it on ITV or HBO (apart from lately).

Yes I realize this, but outside of Lacy: Eu was the biggest name he faced.

Not in America I don't think. I'd imagine Sheika, Brewer and Mitchell are/were bigger names over there than Eubank. And the great Brewer and Mitchell wars were on Showtime ofcourse.

That Sheika fight was make or bust. Joe just knew that he had to perform, not just to keep his career alive but to avoid being beaten! He assured everybody that the three awful performances against Reid, Thornberry and Starie were due to an injured hand and that he'd finally had treatment on it for this fight.. we had to take his word for it, and good job we did, Joe performed! This is most people's favourite Calzaghe fight, because he finally found his 1996/97 form again that night.

Sheika, remember, was supposed to be some kind of top prospect.. there was that big article in The Ring and all that and it was almost a 50/50 fight beforehand.

Geoff you know I'm your second biggest fan at the Scene, and I agree with you not Ian on Calzaghe (I'd pick Joe against most anyone), but ian is the real deal, not an alt. He's a schoolteacher and a good all around guy. He and I have pm'ed. Let him alone he's decent people, although for some reason he doesn't appreciate your contributions here like he should.

"If you criticize Calzaghe you need your head tested." - Roy Jones, 2006

"I don't understand how people say 'Oh he doesn't do this, he doesn't do that'. He already proved himself against Charles Brewer and the kid from Alabama." - Roy Jones, 2006

"Joe Calzaghe is the best British fighter for years and years, better than Eubank, Benn, everyone. That's my call." - Glenn McCrory, 2004

"The sheer depth in Joe's resume is incredible. Before Lacy he already fought guys like Mario Veit who was supposed to be the 'next big thing' in Germany, and if you look at Veit's record he hasn't lost to anybody apart from Joe. And before Lacy he'd already beat all the best America had to offer in Omar Sheika, Charles Brewer and Byron Mitchell. He's even fought Chris Eubank and even Richie Woodhall, his resume reads like a Who's Who of boxing." - Jim Neilly

"It's never nice to go back and a bit disparaging to say he could beat these guys. I will say that Calzaghe is arguably the greatest British fighter there has ever been, so I don't need to compare him to a Collins or a Benn. But because he's a mysterious individual, because he doesn't behave like a star and lives a fairly arcane life in Newport he doesn't get the credit he deserves. Look at the names on his record - Richie Woodhall, Charles Brewer, Byron Mitchell, Robin Reid and of course Lacy. He's beaten all these guys and beaten them well. Look at Mger Mkrtcgian, who's now the European champion. He battered him, took him out in seven rounds. The job he did on Lacy was sensational. He's a remarkable fighter and it's just a shame that for whatever reason he hasn't had more career-defining fights." - Barry McGuigan

Three-weight world champion Duke McKenzie rates Calzaghe as the best British fighter of his lifetime.

BBC boxing's main pundit for 10 years (radio and TV, amateur and pro), Richie Woodhall, rates Calzaghe as the best British fighter he's seen fight live (including TV). Amir Khan says likewise.

Former world lightweight champion and respected commentator Jim Watt rates Calzaghe as the greatest post-war British fighter alongside Ken Buchanan.

"Joe Calzaghe is the proper article, a true warrior!" - Chris Eubank
Jones never said that in any article that I can recall.

                    BBC Radio Five Live.

He once said Calzaghe was his favourite fighter, ages ago, like in the 90's sometime.
