Tito Ortiz: "The UFC Has Taken Over Boxing"
Collapse

I just hope Ortiz will shut his mouth. If he thinks he's really that good maybe he can try fighting a really good boxer just to test his skills.
These grapplers don't know **** about striking, that's why they'd just rather embrace someone on the groundComment

Boxing is better. UFC will not take over.Im tired of hearing this ****.I would honestly say that UFC might be a better fighting sport to watch for a new person that just got into the sport. You know.. People see other people get slammed on the floor and ****. Ground and pound. Submissions and ****.. That would win over any new fan to a fighting sport.. I just find that grappling **** on the floor boring. (Espeacialy when a fighter doesn't do nothing, but hold while on the ground.) UFC should have a 10 count though. I think that would be better, but once you hit the floor it's a wrap. Tito Ortiz is not going to beat Chuck. That man is very dangerous right now. Chuck KO's Tito Ortiz in the 1st round. Ortiz telegraphing a grapple while Chuck throws a nice knee. Ortiz hits the floor. Fight stopped on punches. Ortiz cannot defend himself.Comment

If MMA is so great and doing so great... WHY are its fans and FIGHTERS contsantly trying to convince BOXING and its fans.. That BOXING is dying.. They are ****ing obbsessed with boxing and its status...and they covet boxing fans with a sick desperation..Comment

I agree, Boxing is the far better sport for any fan who wants to see real skill and heart, not just a brawl or 2 grown men rolling around on the floor.Boxing is better. MMA while not attracting big mainstream attention in the UK is alive and well. For instance, one promotion “Cage Rage” draws very good crowds. They held their last card at Earls Court. Which they sold out.I never even seen mma or ufc its not on any major tv station in england none of my mates have even heard of it, i dont think it will ever be an international sport.
There has big a good growth in the UK that has been largely ignored by the media. It's only a few years ago that “Cage Rage” were promoting in nightclubs. Since then they moved onto the Wembley Conference centre, from there they graduated to Wembley Arena which is, for want of a better term, their home venue. Though it has been reported that they might be using Earls Court more in the future as they, might have, outgrown the Arena. While MMA might not be in the mainstream in the UK it is enjoying success. Cage Rage, while the biggest, isn't the only successful promotion in the UK.
The UFC also have a fully operation and staffed office in the UK, and are planning to hold shows in the UK in 2007. They already held one show in the UK in 2002 in the Royal Albert Hall.
In Croatia Mirko “Cro Crop” Filipović got himself elected to parliament and is a very big name there. So much so that, in the past, Pride have considered promoting a card there. The best heavyweight MMA fighter in the world is from the Ukraine. Brazil is, in some respects, the birth place of MMA. Australia also have a successful promotion.
MMA is, of course, huge in Japan.
MMA doesn't have the big international appeal of boxing, yet, but it is a fast growing sport.
It is possible to both be a fan of boxing and MMA. Boxing isn't dying. The UFC isn't killing it. They are different sports that can exist together. However, the people who seem to make threads about MMA killing boxing tend to be boxing fans.If MMA is so great and doing so great... WHY are its fans and FIGHTERS contsantly trying to convince BOXING and its fans.. That BOXING is dying.. They are ****ing obbsessed with boxing and its status...and they covet boxing fans with a sick desperation.
That's a common critique people make of MMA but it's overly simplistic. Take, Josh Koscheck for instance. In 2001 Koscheck went 42-0 in amateur wrestling and won the NCAA division one national title at 174lbs. That is an impressive feat. In fact it's something that only a handful of people have ever accomplished. They are in MMA because they arent good enough to box
Koscheck is a talented athlete but he had been wrestling his whole life. In his twenties he's not just going to be able to become a top boxer. He has though a shot at becoming a top MMA fighter because that is a sport that will let him use his wrestling skills. People have different athletic backgrounds.
One of my favourite athletes is Dan Gable. In 1972 Dan Gable won an Olympic Gold medal in freestyle wrestling without dropping a single point. He is, in my mind, one of the greatest athletes who ever lived. Now, can we discount his achievements by saying that he's not as talented as a top boxer?
I'll preface this by saying that I'm a big boxing fan.Boxing is the far better sport for any fan who wants to see real skill and heart, not just a brawl
Boxing has been dismissed in the same fashion in the past. It's easy for someone who doesn't like boxing to describe it as two thugs brawling with one another.
It is that true? Of course not but some people will look at boxing not see the athleticism, skill and, sometimes, beauty that exists in it. They will dismiss it without even trying to understand it. Some boxing fans tend to look at MMA the same way.
World class BBJ black belts and NCAA wrestlers don't simply roll around on the floor together. They don't just brawl. Personally not seeing the skill in MMA is one thing. Denying that it exists is, quite frankly, ignorant.Last edited by nfc90210; 12-19-2006, 09:51 AM.Comment

I think the only Channel UFC is on in the UK is Bravo. Its no where near as big in the UK as in the U.S.
At first most fight fans are attracted cos of the "gore factor" but when they see a few fights and see most end up in grappling they get bored.
To be honest even though it is entertaining i think its a phase that wont last and will NEVER take over from boxing.Comment

I never meant to give the impression that it was. It is a growing sport though. Its no where near as big in the UK as in the U.S.
That is a bold statement. At first most fight fans are attracted cos of the "gore factor" but when they see a few fights and see most end up in grappling they get bored.
The casual MMA has audience has shown that they can understand and accept grappling when it's good. No one wants to see a fight when one guy just “lays and prays” but that doesn't mean that a fight like Nick Diaz/Diego Sanchez which features great grappling can't get over with the crowd. Tito Ortiz is one of the UFC's biggest stars and he's hardly a striker.Comment
