I rarely get involved in fantasy matches because there is simply no way to know what would have happened. The only way to know is for the fight to have taken place. But since some of you goons are incapable of discussing history without interjecting your personal opinions, I thought we should get this one out of the way.
I'm going with Jack Johnson here for a few reasons.
1. The weight:
In their only fight, Jack Johnson was reportedly 185lbs.
Sam Langford was 156lbs. So that's a 29lb advantage for JJohnson.
So in their prime (as heavyweights), what would the weight be?
Johnson would likely be about 208lbs (his weight for Jefferies is what I'm pondering here) and Langford would be around 170 - 180lbs.
Taking 180, that's a 28lb advantage for Jack. So it's always confused me why people bring up the weights being a big deal and don't seem to realize that the gap in weight wasn't going to change, or would likely become wider if they met later.
2. The first fight:
While Langford certainly got better since the first fight. It would be silly to believe Johnson didn't.
Anyhow, how many times have you heard of Langford taking a one sided beating in his career? Well that's what Johnson did to him in the first fight, with reports that Langford had to be hospitalized after being floored 3 times and having his eye closed. It was said in one report that no man has ever taken such a beating in the Chelsea ring.
Pound for Pound, I'm going with Langford all the way. But Prime for Prime, I'm going Jack Johnson.
Maybe this will help prove the point that I've tried to make over and over: that your personal opinion is your own, neither right nor wrong, and that's all there is to it. But I doubt it.
So let the fighting begin where we all proceed to label each other as dummies for having differing opinions, because everyone knows that opinions are really facts and if your opinion doesn't match with others, they are ignorant morons.
Enjoy!
