Louis actually had good defense most of his career. Later on he got hit more but was still savvy enough to avoid the most dangerous stuff. When he was younger and quicker he had a very efficient defense which allowed him to annihilate larger men. He would roll and slide the big blows while throwing vicious leather in between. Smaller quicker men gave him the most trouble, which generally is a sign that a boxer is actually a technician rather than a power house. Ali struggled the same way.
the problem is, the footage of Louis isnt so good. Its from a distance and the frame rate is poor.
