If we're gonna name Ike, we should name Golota and Sanders... and even include the disappointments of the 80s Heavyweight scene... Cooney, Dokes, Tate, Thomas, etc.
Hi Rusty - all of the highlighted names you mention did win a title, for what the trinkets are worth...

In regard to Golota, had he owned half a functioning brain he could have done real good in his era. Yet another waste of talent.

        thanks for the fix, man!

I sometimes get their achievements mixed up. But mostly I remember them for their unrealized potential. SO sad.

Good call. Lopez would be a champ today. Gritty fighter who was all heart. Never in a boring fight.

                - -Read an article on him growing up as an indigenous Mexican Indian in the desert they had been banished to.

No nothing but a loving family scraping what they could. He lives in southern Cali where he's a local hero for his Community contributions.

And it was boxing that first gave him greater access the the world...amen

Larry Fine (boxed as "Kid Roth" --when his opponent wore gloves, he didn't have to worry that much about getting poked in the eye)
Bob Hope (boxed as "Packy East" -- if he landed a shot just right, "Bing!")

                      At what weight?

At 175 Kovalev in the last decade and Beterbiev today kill him.

At 168 Ward in the last decade and Saunders, Canelo, and Smith today make him look crude.

I agree he was a great fighter, though. But I suspect he was destined to be forever the bridesmaid.
