When teaching, it was highly gratifying when students asked questions. If they care enough to speak up they're involved. If they're involved, they're learning. But early on it's important to establish with students that a question is coming from a perspective that the subject might not have shared. Otherwise the answer will likely be unsatisfying and lend as much to further confusion. A point like yours had to made pretty regularly to help students reorient.
It's really less important teaching kids "A" history than it is to understand history. Otherwise you get examples like Spazzo.

Originally posted by HOUDINI563 View PostMy father, who was close to the sport, watched Dempsey and Louis train many times and Louis fight numerous bouts all through the 30’s and 40’s. He always felt that both fighters had differing styles but similar offenses. Fast short punching with Dempsey firing to the body more so than Louis and Dempsey being the more durable. He always felt, as did others, that the initial Dempsey rush would be too much for Joe to handle. However if he got through the first 2-3 rounds the odds of victory would tip to Louis. (as it would indicate Joe was able to muffle the Dempsey rushes).
Fleischer originally favored Dempsey in a bout with Louis by early ko but this changed as the years went by. As of the late 60’s Nat stated that both fighters hit equally hard but Joe had better boxing ability. He favored Louis by ko in six rounds at that time.
Louis was troubled by lesser punchers than Jack, and there's no reason to believe Dempsey would fade down the stretch. Conn was a phenomenal fighter, but definitely no Jack Dempsey. He took LOTS of abuse from Louis and troubled Louis even late in the fight.

Rusty is full of ****.
Impossible to determine speed comparing film footage from the 40’s vs “silent” film footage from the teens and twenties. Louis has incredibly quick fists and excellent boxing ability. Was he a defensive master ala Johnson, no. Louis however had the greatest combination of one punch ko power AND boxing ability in heavyweight history. Great jab, excellent ability to parry, block, slip when he needed to but could level any opponent at any time with one shot from either fist.
From first hand eye witnesses the only way this parameter can be logically determined Dempsey was quicker.
Dempsey probably could take it on the chin better than Joe. They both hit similarly as hard.

- -Always favored Jack early and Joe late long before the current misfits miscast outside their diapers.
The genius of that fight would be the mid rounds. Mind your manners and maybe some of U derilects may be admitted to Valhalla for this fight that almost coulda been in real life.
