We are allowed to say that perhaps Toney was not at his best. But we cannot rationalize ring performance to a great degree without creating a slippery slope. I am sympatheric, don't misunderstand me... Its why in the good ole days when guys like Maxie Rosenbloom fought a rival, they might fight five times, or so. We know that La Motta beat Ray Robinson and that Robinson usually won and can discount all the possible external factors affecting the fighters as coming out in the wash.
Modern day fighting, and fighters like Jones and Mayweather particularly only gave so many bites at the apple. Toney is very proud of his penchent for fighting and should have really considered what would happen if he went in against Jones, less than fully prepared. Preparation for the fight is alas, part of the fight.Comment

It’s funny how the excuse for James Toney looking like he’d never boxed a day in his life when he was totally embarrassed and schooled by Roy Jones is that “he wasn’t prepared or in shape” (like that would be anyone’s fault but his own)
So when exactly was James Toney “prepared and in shape” to compare this data?Last edited by IronDanHamza; 08-06-2020, 12:23 PM.Comment
