  • Who would you favor Louis to Beat

After reading a number of posts about Louis and H2H it got me wondering Who of these heavyweight champs would you favor prime Louis to beat?

I guess for the sake of establishing a base for discussion I'd hope you could put a percentage next to each fighter of what odds you would give Louis to beat them (ex. if you think Louis stood a decent chance against Ali, but not favor him you'd put a 40% next to Ali).

    Fury
    W. Klitschko
    V. Klitschko
    Lewis
    Bowe
    Holyfield
    Tyson
    Holmes
    Foreman
    Frazier
    Ali
    Liston
    Patterson
    Marciano
    Charles
    Tunney
    Dempsey
    Johnson

I know, a lot of names. But just wondering where everyone actually ranks the Bomber?

Wanted to respond to your thread, not much of a percentage guy. Numbers have to tell more or a story for me to "see them." Many of these fights you mention have a lot of trajectories.

Generally speaking Louis has a puncher's chance against most of the fellow greats. Louis, like most fighters of his generation came in as light as possible, so we cannot assume he would be 190 pounds to fight someone like Fury or Lewis, unless he wanted to do so, adding more to the equation.

So lets take Mccall who caught Lewis once and who has some real skills, but was no Joe Louis... So its possible that Louis would have a chance against the bigger guys, not necessarily probable.

        - -Left the ones who best give Louis a tussle.

% value is meaningless without defining the agreed terms that every fight is dependent on.

Fair enough, I'll try to pick the rule set that lands most in the median of modern boxing: 18 foot ring, 8oz gloves, 15 rounds, etc.

In a 15 round fight I like Joe's chances a lot against the giants like Klitschko and Lewis.

              - -Also figure Valuev gives Joe grief.

The only two who beat him had to be hospitalized with severe rope burns on their backs.

Only Ali would potentially be favored over Louis. Louis, like Ali, had a unusually high level of skill unmatched by any heavyweight before or since. It would be very difficult for the slower moving large heavyweights today to avoid his trip hammer combinations. The highest odds to beat Louis would be the ATG boxers Ali, Tunney and Holmes. Of these three Holmes propensity to be hit with right hands spells doom as this was Joes deadliest punch.

Valuev couldn't even beat the carcass of ancient Holyfield.

Queenie loves Valuev lol. I could never figure out why. I mean as a citizen and person he is, by all accounts, a wonderful guy. But as a fighter...Not so good.
