This NY Times August 11th, 1926 article offers a very su****ious New York State.

Colonel Phelan, New York State License Committee Chairman pulls a strange technicality out his ass which makes you think that New York never intended to license Dempsey no matter what . . .

(Incidentally, the NYSAC had the power to sanction a fight but did not have the authority to licence a fighter. That occurred under a different office NYSLC (in this case headed by Colonel Phelan, who from some accounts did not get along with William Muldoon of the NYSAC).

1. Dempsey tries to use the Michigan contract from 1925 to show he tried to defend his title against Wills but that the fight feel through for lack of payment.

2. Wills confirms the contract.

3. Colonel Phelan reviews the contract and then pulls a technicality out his ass. Wait till you see what that technicality was, you're both going to LOL.

They couldn’t deliver a $25K check let alone a real $300K one. You’re gullible enough to believe everything you read from 100 years ago. They pulled a check out of their ass after the contract was already broken. Too little too late. Wills went on to get his ass beat down by Sharkey and KTFO by a little Italian fella, lol. He didn’t stand a chance with Dempsey. Jack did him a favor, ‘ole Harry should have the $250K to get KO’d by Tunney instead of Sharkey. Wills made a lot of poor career choices.
