  • Bowe v Frazier?

    Frazier of 1970 v Bowe of 1992.
Personally Im inclined to think this could be one of Joe's hardest fights. Your opinion s of this potential classic?

This is a tough one. I'm not sure if Bowe has the punching power to just put Frazier away and the longer the fight goes, the more I have to favor Frazier. I think Bowe would drop Frazier and Bowe's chances of winning go up if they have the 3 knockdowns in a round win the fight. So I'll say Bowe early, Frazier late.

I feel like this is the safe bet.

Bowe is terribly overrated, but there's no denying that he was a big man who was tremendous on the inside.

He was no Foreman, but he was closer to him than he was to Mathis. Somewhere between Ali of FOTC and Ali of the Rematch - ironic, because the worse version of Ali beat Frazier.

I also don't think Bowe goes down that easy. Sure, when he wasn;t winning he kjust kinda stood there and took punishment. But he wasn't a Julian Jackson type.

Since Frazier lacked real KO power, I kinda feel the best he can HOPE for is a narrow UD.

Bowe had a good chin. This helps him. Frankly Frazier has some similarities to Holyfield for this one. When Holly listened to his corner and boxed, was the one time he won. Frazier could box and I think this gives him the fight and yes, probably a narrow UD. With that said, Bowe did not like it to the body either. Golota was succesful that way, despite the illegal blows. Frazier punishes Bowe with the hook to the body.

Yeah, Bowe never went 15 rounds, while Frazier did it consistently and effectively.

People talk about prime Bowe, but that's kinda like people talking about Snipe Hunting. Meanwhile, Frazier in Manilla - far, far past his best - put on a performance that outshines anything Bowe ever did.

The best recipe for beating Bowe was to Box. If you had a jab and some reach, even better. But even Holyfield did it. Frazier could not Box like Holyfield and he didn't have Holyfield's size (he was denser & stronger, but not as heavy or as long).

The second best way to beat Bowe, was like you said, go Golota. Frazier could do that wonderfully.

But I really do wonder if that puts Joe in the line of fire. He might return to the well one too many times. Bowe isn't as big or as talented as Tyson Fury, but he's headed in that direction: the point where it's ridiculous to compare men of such disparity.

The early rounds will be really hairy for Frazier, since it took so long for him to get to work. Even once he "turns on", he's not out of the woods until the final bell sounds. But I think his odds drastically improve once he gets into gear.

Frazier. maybe even by stoppage. I'm not sure Bowe is a great heavyweight. He's certainly good, but Frazier is great. Frazier would put in that extra effort, and considering Bowes likely willingness to trade inside, its probably goes in Frazier Favor. Bowe gets his shots in im sure, but Joe is incredibly resilient and his work in the championship rounds are some of the best. I think Bowe has heavy shots but not the kind of blows that will put Joe away for good.

In the other factor people often overlook is how good of a puncher Joe was. He was stopping everyone, and even managed to put Ali down as we all know.

If you stood there and let Joe get his shots in he broke you down.

As for Rusty going on about size again, Ramos was 6 ft 4, bugner was 6 ft 5, Mathis is 6 ft 4

as if it matters anyways, Holyfield was what 206 lbs? coming from light heavyweight as well, Joe was training down in weight.

The trombone a bit of a size queen? Who knew?

Frazier was very accurate for a hooker. The fight inside would be a good one with Frazier more or less looking as effective as Golota in all probability. But yeah... I don't see Big daddy winning this one.
