He was a tremendous fighter. Never wasted a punch, economical with incredible timing and power. Also the man was so brave its not true. Hed have been a match for anyone in any era and you can make a case for him being the best at heavy.

You can to some degree say the same about Ali but if he didn't have his hiatus hed have come up against frazier sooner and that would have been hard.
Stop the dumb quotes follower cause he is overrated

How many defences would Louis have had without the war? 30?, 35? 40? Ali was remarkable but I seem to view him with a colder eye than I once did. Louis was the best heavy ever.

Amazing that such an absurd opinion exists. Louis was the most talented and deadly heavyweight ever to live. If you watch his bouts with Baer, Carnera others you see him nimbly circling, side stepping and counterpunching. Louis could do it all.

The idea that such a swift, deadly two fisted combination puncher who could slip, feint, block, parry and counter would do VERY well against Ali is easily imagined. A one handed heavyweight in Frazier who had none of the deep skills of Louis gave Ali hell in three fights. Louis hook was quicker and far more deadly than Frazier and he was able to follow up that hook with a bone shattering right hand. In my mind it’s a toss up fight but it would not surprise me in the least that Ali gets stopped.

That is an interesting question. Three defenses a year over 4 years and two months, comes out to about 37 (I am not counting the Johnny Davis fight as a defense, it wasn't.)

Also it should be noted that Louis fought many exhibitions between 1944 and his first 'return' defense agsinst Billy Conn (II) in 1946.

One has to wonder if there was no War would he have continued the pace of a 'bum a month' or slowed down.

Another question I find interesting is whether there was any real HW contenders during the Wars years who got screwed out of their shot at the title?

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any worthy contenders during the War years that missed out.

I would say a younger Walcott but he doesn't even get noticed (by the NBA) until 1946, and the NYSAC a few months later.

Charles was still campaigning as a LHW ????? (Not sure if he is ready by '43 or '44.)

Of course Conn should have gotten his rematch in October of '42 but Uncle Mike Jaccobs screwed that one up. That would have been an important fight.

In the end I doubt Louis loses any of those fictitious defenses from the War years, so I think we are looking at 35 to 40 possible suggestful defenses.

Makes you wonder if we would be having all this 'Louis is overrated' nonsense had there been no War. Probably yes!

Thrre's one guy on here that claims he can discern 'facts' from watching Louis fight on film, he would probably still be at it, employing his god-like eye to the fight game and bashing Louis.
