In the old days I would have done that dog kicker like Musashi did Prince Koto! As the b@stard drew his sword I would use an oar and bash his head in. Then I would let Johnny lick the brains up.

Feeling chest pains, he phones from his room to the hotel receptionist asking for a doctor. "Do you want me to send up the house doctor?"
"No", Max says, "I want the human doctor."
There are so many funny stories about Max. But a sad one is, that he didn't take his occupation too seriously until he was over the hill. He should have kept this title reign a lot longer, but was very much like the heavy titlists in the 80s: win a title, then party.

There is a theory about Max regarding his frivality. One should remember that Max while seldom prepared to fight, was always in great physical condition, which imo lends credability to the theory. Simply stated: When The brother of first baseman Dolph Camillo died in the ring fighting Baer it really upset him. Part of him decided on that day to not hit like that again. A lot of people think that Max really meant it when he declared such...
I tend to think he did. I can honestly say I would If I ever did that. I might hit hard occasionally but I would never try to smash someone in the same way. If Max had just been lazy he would not have been in such good condition for his fights. Max was very bright, a real charming sort and could have easily been a stone cold killer if he put his mind to it...I just think that he did not like to hurt people.
Now and then we see a hard right thrown by Baer and are reminded that when he chose to he had a punch for the ages.Last edited by billeau2; 08-27-2019, 06:42 PM.

- -There was a noted holier than thou physical trainer in the day who when interviewed after Max upset Primo, deplored,(Paraphrased)
"We now have a man who holds the most prestigious sporting honor in the world, the heavyweight title, and he trains on beer. God save us."
And he did with Everyman James Braddock who walked off his construction site for one of the all time upsets for the people.

I see a lot of similarities to Wilder. That sudden frenetic energy. Some say Baer's right was the hardest punch pound for pound...who knows lol.

It always bothers me when I see the way he was portrayed in THE CINDERELLA MAN, he could not be further from the character. Max was a clown who loved to crack jokes and was not a huge fan of training. Also by all accounts I have seen he was always bothered by killing that fighter in the ring. Kind of like the movie THE HURRACANE about Ruben Carter. In the movie they make it seem he got a bad dec when he fought Giadello. In EVERY fight report I have seen NOBODY thought he won. Also he was NOT gonna become champ if he did not go away, he had lost like 3 out of last 5 and had been going downhill for a while. One last thing if you REALLY check into that murder im not so sure he was not guilty, the whole movie is fiction.
