In America, if you have at least one black parent and retain a lot of black features then you’d be considered African American. That’s how it works. It might be different in other countries and other ethnic groups, but among African Americans mixed people are included. Similar to how mexico is a mixed race society, yet whether you’re a mestizo, white, Amerindian or something else, you’ll always be considered mexican. Simple really.

Mad? Im enjoying this, no mad about it. African American is a category that is argued, continually redefined...Mostly by members of its own class. College lectures always have well educated individuals arguing over what it means to be African american. That is actually how it works.

Now you don't like to read... But if you did you would find that the whole conflict of lighter darker is an issue, has social consequences, etc. You are mistaking social conventions for absolute indicators...like Genetics. And equating race as an absolute when in fact it is not.

I can now see these two gentlemen are arguing over two different issues as if they were one. Stoker is content with colloquial notions of race, Billy wants a precise breakdown, even bringing in genetic analysis.

Stoker is talking about what people are racially CALLED, Billy about what they racially ARE.

Case in point: ***** is CALLED the first black president. It would not exactly be common to hear him referred to as the first Hawaiian president, we can agree. He doesn't have a drop of Hawaiian in him. He is NOT the first black president, either, but will always be popularly called that.
