I believe any ref had been bewildered. It's said the timekeeper and The Ring editor Nat Fleischer were yelling to Walcott to stop the fight.
Fleischer at the time was an important voice in boxing. He knew a fighter scoring a knockdown should enter a neutral corner. But in this fight, he somehow returned to the old rule book.
I can imagine Walcott, put under pressure, listened to Fleischer's wrong call. As Fleischer was a prominent figure in the branch, Walcott believed he did right stopping the fight.
However, it wasn't. If there's anyones fault for this premature stoppage, I think it is Fleischer's.
