  • Them Bones: James Toney Crushes Michael Nunn to Win his First Title

Nobody expected James Toney, a 20-1 underdog with a low profile but a perpetual scowl, to win. Certainly not Michael Nunn, the glib IBF middleweight champion with a 36-0 record and five successful title defenses under his belt. A flashy stylist in the ring, Nunn was also a master trash-talker. With a street-regal air, Nunn belittled Toney every chance he got. When told that Toney was quoted as saying he preferred violence over sex, Nunn stepped in with a low blow. “If you’ve ever seen James Toney,” Nunn said, “you can see why he feels that way. The man is ugly. Who is going to go out with an ugly man like that?”

Holy crap, those are great quotes. And that was a hell of a good fight. I gotta update my Toney career set, now that he's finally retired. Jones too. Man, they stuck around way too long.

      Good article.

So if Nunn stays away for two rounds and wins the easy decision do we ever hear from James Toney again? Considering his charming personality probably not.

One of my favorite fights ever.. remember watching this as a kid. Pretty much unknown toney vs Micheal Nunn who was viewed as many to be the heir apparent to Leonard/Hearns/Hagler as the best fighter on the planet

I keep running into different stories about the the odds for Tyson-Douglas.

I have heard 40-1, 48-1 and I even run across statements that the casinos called it a no-bet fight. I wonder what the truth is; I wonder if anyone actually got to cash a winning ticket? If so I would love to hear why that guy placed such a bet.

It actually makes a lot of sense considering the odds to most lottery winnings.

I actually heard some places did view it at a no-bet fight

Did they have drug testing for that fight?
