Two qualities which are more frequently average in ATGs than other qualities are speed and power. There are many ATGs of whom you can say, "He wasn't that fast," or, "He didn't punch that hard."

Coming back as he did from the brink of defeat to overwhelm and stop the No 1 contender and former hwt champion is the stuff ATG fighters are made of.
An ATG has to possess plenty of will and desire to win. Those are called intangibles. The tangible part of the equation is chin. Without a stellar beard no amount of will power can save a man. Chin is what backs up a boxer's will power. Great will power without a great chin is like a man with a huge cóck yet lacking the ȃss to drive it.

Lots of greats had mediocre power. I don't think Holmes was a power puncher, but he seldom sat down on his punches either. Wouldn't argue this is not a mediocre quality, only that the greats made up for their less than stellar qualities in other ways.

Toughness, will to win and heart all go hand in hand. The ability however to have the intestinal fortitude not just via an inmate ability to take a blow but also fight through pain and fatigue to win as did Ali in his third bout with Frazier is the ultimate make of an ATG. It links those who came later with the Jeffries who overcame Sharkey while having his skin fried off via the lighting needed to film this bout in 1899.

It one of the most famous stories in boxing history. Google it. Jeffries vs Sharkey at Coney Island NY.

Another side note is the athletic club where this bout took place is the current site of the Coney Island (NY) aquarium.

Well I would say Wlad's rather weak chin, but he's not really considered an ATG, now is he? Just a guy that dominated a rather weak era, yes? Or someone who had the benefit of an ATG trainer like Emanuel Stewart to help him protect his shaky chin?

If you are the target of a powerful jab, again and again and again - after some rounds everyone of that jab feels like a power punch.
