What extra recovery time? The ref gave him and 8 count, did a quick evaluation and than the fight started again immediately. Larry got dropped hard, but even his most ardent haters have to admit he had an amazing ability to recover quickly.
Had that been Ernie KDing the turnbuckle, fight stopped instantly. But boxing ain't ever been fair anymore than you ain't ever been aware.
See the alltime highlight real of Kostya KD of Judah who jumped up to promptly keel over, jump up again while pointing his glove at Nady who had to dive over to grab him up from lurching out of the ring next untouched KD, all from a single Kostya punch.

So often pride makes these fighter jump up when they're not ready. Buster Douglas is another example of the right way to handle a KD.
Other big mistakes include Carnera (Max Baer; first KD) and Willard (Jack Dempsey; first KD). Both would have been better served if they had stayed down for the full eight. Both took their worst beatings of the fight after jumping up too quickly after the first KD. Both were able to go for more rounds but were never in the fight again.
Patterson - Johansson I --> Patterson jumped up too quickly and subsequently went down six more times.
