It can and often is. More dangerous IMO though is loaded or unpadded gloves. Like with Luis Resto.

In fact, boxers built like gymnasts is more or less the phenomenon you are talking about between early 20th century and mid to late 20th century in boxers' bodies, I think.

One of the more muscular boxers I can think of was Rubin Carter. His traps and deltoids looked like a steroid body. Young Holyfield too. Emile Griffith. I have seen photos of old time strongmen from the 1920's and before whose business was muscle, but they didn't have the defined musculature of some of these modern boxers.

I assume that since one can recover from brutal workouts quicker with juice, that also means one can push harder and a little longer and still be recovered in time to perform at maximal level.

I have seen these bodies around from the 50's and 60's, too, and wondered about them. For a fact the eastern block countries were into steroids. That is why their female gymnasts from that era now have beards.

Would it even be shocking to learn that many or most of our greatest boxing idols were juiced to their gills?

At least I don't think Mickey Walker was on PED. I feel safe that Tunney and Langford were not.
I'm glad you mentioned Sam Langford, he's a pretty good example of a boxer with amazing genetics who had a strong body but did not look unnatural.

      Young Peter Jackson

      Jim Jeffries

That's what muscular boxers would look like without steroids and todays weight lifting training/supplements. Notice that they don't have the unnatural look on their traps and shoulders.

I had the same thought when watching a recent Butterbean fight,

This isn't a surprise to me nor should it be to anyone else. All pro athletes at the top of their game are on PED's, boxers included. It's a necessity to compete at that level and you can't have peak performance without them.

This is a hilarious thread though, I lold at the youtube fight title "Roid Jones jr". That's the unfiltered truth.

Great work keep it up by making more threads on other boxers.

Anyone who thinks this is a modern phenomenon should watch the "No No - A Dockumentary" film on the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Yankees pitcher, Dock Ellis, who famously claimed to have pitched a no-hitter whilst high as a kite on LSD.

Whether Ellis did this or not is a matter of debate (it's one of those stories that if not true - should be!) - but no-one doubts the testimonies of Ellis' colleagues and teammates who admitted that the use of drugs (particularly amphetamines) was completely out-of-control in all major sports as far back as the late 40s.

"You just couldn't compete without them".

Some people say the banning of amphetamines is what has really decreased the offensive output in baseball more than steroid banning and tougher testing of that substance.

Bill Lee the space man also claimed to have done that. ******* was also epic in Basketball and Baseball through the 1970's. And people might be suprised to know that Chewing tobacco was a big one also.
