If we’re talking the Hagler that fought Hearns I gotta go with him. Although I think it’s a close and tough fight in any case.

I keep switching my pick on this fight every week. Real, real close.

They don't seem to get much closer. They both had an extra bit of toughness even for champions.

I read an article about Hagler and Duran meeting for the first time. It was at some event. Marvin was thrilled to meet the legend. Duran walked up close and measured himself to Marvin, and seemed surprised.

"Hagler, you not so big. Maybe me fight you sometime."

The writer noted that Marvin's expression changed immediately and grew darker. Even to casually remark in friendly pidgin that you might someday fight was enough for Marvin to withdraw and become moody. Opponents were someone to kill.

Let Roberto try that crap with Carlos. They would have been picking him up off the floor, if he lived beyond that moment.

Why are you talking about Duran vs Monzon? No one ever suggested Duran could beat Monzon. Carlos was simply too rangy and had the wrong style for the little man. I will tell you this: Duran was a better P4P fighter than either. Anyone who doubts this needs a trip to the woodshed.

Wasn't Duran a great street fighter?

You make it sound like Duran was some chump lol.
You really think when Duran walked upto someone and called them out he wasn't ready to lamp them there and then?

This reminds of a video I saw with some former middleweight talking about when he first met Duran at one of Durans fights and how he was happy to meet Duran and was taking a picture with him then Duran dropped him with a sucker punch! lol

I'm pretty sure they fought in the ring many years later.
The guys name escapes me doe...

              I agree

But he was actually talking about Duran vs monzon in a street fight.

              I say Duran rushes him!

                Over-hyped.

Lets not forget Leonard had a detached retina to. Haggar wass awful

If Hagler was the real deal he would have ended Duran.

Imagine what RJJ in his prime at 154 would do to Morales at 154. He would have starched him and Morales might be the greatest Mexican fighter ever talent wise.

Not even RJJ, even Kelly Pavlik vs Morales at 160. Brutal slaying.
Haggler wasn't really a puncher doe. The fan boys just pretend he was.

I want to share something with you since you brought this topic out with Lefty... The great Joe Rein, a man who professional scribes looked up to (I used to ask him about anything I wrote for any of the sites) and a man with boxing knowledge as encyclopiaec as some of the best...Joe passed at a late age and started fighting early, so... He met many fighters.

Joe was a special individual but you could always ask him any ****** question and never feel ashamed. And ask I would lol. So once I asked Joe who the most feared guy, the guy in the room that would scare the chest hair off a bear, the boxer that had what the Japanese call "Saki" killing energy.

Now i want you to realize something, this is a man who had met Dempsey, Tunney, Toney, Tyson...he was from that generation that just missed Johnson and still around until recently and in the game!

He told me two things: He said that Gene Fullmer LOOKED like somebody took a human being and put them in a rock tumbler. Scary looking man. BUT the meanest, the one who was truly scary in a way Tyson could never be was Duran. So there you go! lol. Thats a true story, I forget exactly how he put it with Fullmer but you get the idea.

Oh yeah... he said with Duran it was the eyes. He made me think of the great scene in "Jaws: when Quenton is describing a shark's eyes... one of the finest sollilqueys ever imo... He said Duran had killer beady eyes that showed no mercy, were intense, and looked right through you.

You mean "Lifeless eyes, like a doll's eyes"? And it's Quint, by the way.

                      Good post.

                      Doesn't surprise me honestly.

I'm actually surprised there isn't more stories of him punching other fighters outside the ring.
