A basketball player who turned to boxing very late (during his college years) is currently the WBC heavyweight champion of the world.

That's how poor the HW division is these days.

This is because pre-professional boxers were so abysmally skilled they really weren't proper sportsmen at all.

Pre-professional (pre-80's) boxers were kind of the dregs left over who couldn't make it in already established sports through lack of talent but still had the competitive spirit and edge for conditioning combined with the anger and aggression from being useless at anything else to beat each others brains out in an archaic sort of fashion..

Of course the rest of the story is history... Circa 1980, sports science was applied to boxing, boxing became a professional sport in its own right, and the threat from the basketballers would be no more..

How can you not love this guy? Instead of urging the mods to ban him, we should thank him for the top-class entertainment he brings to this forum. Ali was "chinny", Frazier "featherfisted"... and Robinson and Louis were so bad, they would be struggling to find work today as sparring partners! Honestly, I was ROFL when I saw that last one!

And now this post, where boxers from before 1980 are so inept, that we can't even call them professionals! C'mon you guys... how is this not funny?

I used to feel that way about the idiot. ..but they grow tiresome. Sonny, elroy, etc cannot accept that reposting the same tripe does not turn said tripe into steak. They screw up every thread. They keep posting the same inanities.

Sonny Liston had the longest reach in history, some claimed it to be 90ins+ Yet he could not land a jab on Muhammad Ali. Wilt's jab would be nothing but a paw, Wilt would need to plant his feet to throw a punch etc. Ali would crucify him.. So again, your comments are foolish, wrong and fanciful.. you are the "Village Idiot" of the forum. but i accept that you bring laughter with your foolish comments.

            10 Rocky Marciano 5'10"

One loss eliminates a contestant from the tourney. How does the fighting proceed, according to the ...ahem!...esteemed gentlemen of the board?

In the first bout Angus McKaskill has eliminated Nicolai Valuev by one punch KO.

The next bout up is Marciano vs Jordan, where a one foot height differential is in play.

All this busniness of "what if Wilt or so-and-so had trained for years at boxing, is not the discussion. They have about four months to get ready and learn boxing, not years and years, or the discussion meanders and leaves its point.
Marciano would be fighting out of a crouch, he would be under 5'0'' and Jordon would only have the back of the Rock's head as his target (illegal).. NO fighter in boxing history applied more pressure than "The Rock", who wins this fantasy match-up the first left-hook that he lands.

Liston was not tall AT ALL ,not even Holyfields height,or fast obviously , you have no clue what you are talking about as usual , if reach is all one needed anyway Terrell who had LONGER reach with added height would have been able to beat Liston too, though he lasted 15 rnds with Ali didnt he...with ONE eye? The comparison means nothing anyway since Liston was not a prime fighter anyway but a slow lunging fighter . Reach entails more than just arm length , i'll let you figure out why you dope !

You are also only arguing with yourself ,being i dont hold the conversation of Wilt vs Ali as important as Wilt vs Alis opposition .... again the fool is you ,dont believe me? Go check the mirror! 90 PLUS INCH for Liston ,aye ?

The WBC is a now utterly corrupt organisation which achieved it's goal of reinstating an American champion by force by excluding European competition.

In the event of Vitali retiring, common sense dictates that the first in line challenger (Stiverne) should have faced the obvious champ (W.Klitschko) who likely would have unified all belts to become "undisputed" as old timers call it (which for political reasons is now and forever will be a meaningless concept).

What we seen instead was an arbitrary American (Arreola) challenge and then another arbitrary American (Wilder) take it from an extremely sick guy and with no prior credentials either.

Wilder should be immediately stripped of his WBC title and have it handed to Povetkin. He should face a 12 month suspension and the WBC should be relegated to only a regional championship now in favour of something like the IBO and it's managers prosecuted.

Wilder is about as illegitimate champion as you can get who still hasn't faced a decent healthy opponent, has shown very doubtful signs of being able to and even willing to.

To answer your question, I'm not supposing basketballers can't do well in boxing which is evident if you read my other posts.

All I am saying is that the skills of MODERN PROFESSIONAL HW boxers trump obviously mostly untrained basketballers in competition today H2H. In the past, those skills were so rudimentary in pre-professional times that the basketballers could likely have beaten them anyway.

Think Frazier, MArciano and Louis and Dempsey... These little guys were pretty bloody ordinary really. Failures at other athletic ventures most likely who turned to boxing in frustration which was THEN a bit of a circus sport.
