He basically did at light heavy, it was just a weak era for lightheavy. Plus right as jones moved up, dariusZ had one 2 titles but was stripped of one of them and kept one, so dariusz always had at least a claim of being #1.

From 160-168 jones should have really landed some big fights. There was a lot of talent and big names during that era.. That's why I rank floyd and pernell's resume slightly higher

As well you should. I give Roy the edge head to head though.

HBO also met with Klaus Peter-Kohl in an attempt to make the fight. That went nowhere as well.

I don't remember Jones "ducking" Nunn either. Nunn wasn't very good at 175, for starters. And he lost to Rochigianni about six months after Jones beat Griffin in the rematch.

Liles was knocked out cold by Reggie Johnson. Literally. I remember after that performance many were implying (including Larry Merchant) that Jones was ducking Reggie Johnson. The rest is history.

Edit: It was William Guthrie knocked out by Johnson, not Liles. However there was a List of fighters presented to Jones by Larry Merchant with the implication that Jones was ducking them. Along with Johnson there was also David Telesco.

I guess the point is that there always seemed to be a fighter Jones was supposedly "ducking" After he beat them easily the goal post would move to another fighter. Similar to Mayweather's situation.

The nunn fight wasn't when roy was at 175.. It was during his 168 days.. Nunn was either a titlist there or a top contender between 93-97 and IIRC he was appointed the mandatory to jones but then jones vacated and moved to 175.

Liles was a longtime 168 champ, I think at least 4 maybe 5-6 years.. Kinda like an Ike quartey or tito trinidad welter reign pre-Oscar.. Plus he was an amateur nemesis to roy similar to how shane was to Oscar.. It would have been a much bigger fight than Brannon or lucas

Jones had it all setup to land a yearly big fight in the mid 90s.. If I was a boxing God we would have had
              Roy vs toney in 94
              Eubanks in 95
              Benn in 96
Liles 97--- then move to 175.

You could also substitute collins or nunn in there.. Maybe g-man

Nunn was a mandatory for Jones' 175 lb WBC title. Roy refused to make the defense, but the WBC let him slide. This eventually led to a lawsuit which nearly put the WBC out of business.

I'm pretty sure he was also a contender at 168.. And I thought the lawsuit was about when roy vacated to fight buster douglas, only for it to fall thru and they gave him the belt back even though some euro won a vacate title fight for it

I'm not Googling this so my memory could be faulty. All that could be true. What I remember for sure is that when Jones wouldn't fight Nunn, the WBC ordered an eliminator between Nunn and Rocchigianni in Germany. Rocchigianni won a decision, but never got the title. He sued the WBC and won enough to put them out of business, but took a large settlement instead. The WBC literally begged him for mercy.

You are right about the lawsuit.. I just forgot the guy's name that sued.. But I swear that nunn was also a contender at 168 prior to that. I know nunn was a 168 champ til about 95
