Mike McCallum vs. Marvin Hagler.

Mccallum was fighting at 154 in the mid 80s. Hagler was fighting Duran, Hearns, and Mugabi at that time. By the time Mccallum went to 160, Hagler was retired or waiting for a Leonard rematch.Comment

I like Mike to give Hagler a good fight but I think he falls short. Mike has good experience in his youth against top tier competition on the national level in the mid 70s. He was a regional & national champ and started off with Georgie Benton as his trainer and thats all a fighter needs to jump start his career.
He had good size and an could be an awkward style for some guys but again Hagler using two sides (switching) to figure him out and being able to box and counter well would give him a decided edge for me.
Being at 154 for the better part of his prime isn't that much of a disadvantage because Hagler could weigh 158 and be tip top. Hagler would give a few inches in height to Mike too. Good fight!

Mike is one of my all-time favorites. Sadly, though, I agree with you on this.Comment

Neither man is fast but Hagler has McCallum when it comes to hand and foot speed and i think that would clinch it for him.
Fights between two technically superb guys like this are often decided by those little differences in speed. Power comes into play usually also however no one is knocking out Hagler.
I do think this fight is closer than some give credit.Comment

Depending what distance the fight was fought 12rds or 15rds.. Marvin boasted many times that he was a 15rd fighter. Yet the only 2 times he fought 15rds Hagler lost rounds 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 on all judges scorecards.. it would be curtains for him against McCallum.

I get it now, Sonny is an idiot to be laughed at and when he tries to convince everyone that great fighters (Hagler, L Lewis, S Sanchez) aren't great but bums instead, we should find humor instead of being offended by the ravings of the village idiot.Comment

I like Benton & Futch they were outstanding trainers and very good at evaluations when in the corner. They get the nod 95% of the time in any fight. However the Haglers corner was unique in that the Petronelli Brothers
were also outstanding with Hagler, they were excellant in the gym and were also excellant at opponents evaluating.
I worked against all of the above and with Futch once or twice. The Petronelli's had a few amateur fighters who competed in Region 1 (New England) which was my region and their kids were always in shape and competitive!
Very very good boxing skills and minds!
