Duran was not in the same shape physically and mentally for the second fight he did win a few rounds but when Léonard clowned it messed up Duran's psych to the degree he just was starting to be ineffective and embarrassed so he quit and may have instantly regretted it.

I would make Duran from the first Leonard an overwhelming favorite over any body today under middleweight.

It doesn't matter. He quit and didn't want to finish the fight. He obviously didn't think he could win. Quitting is quitting regardless of the reasons.

You guys can argue how much impact the no mas should or should not have.....I have no horse in that race frankly.

But on the point above it is really quite simple, the fact is that when Duran quit he was in a close fight. This point is important because a lot of people might assume that Duran, like a lot of people quit because he was behind and could not catch Ray.

I do think that there is a narrative that seems to undermine Duran and I don't agree with that. people have to understand that Duran was that good as Leonard was.

I am a big Duran fan but this statement is correct

still amazes me to this day that duran would quit in a fight. he was such a warrior in all his other fights and had that strong will to win. its not like he was getting detroyed or beat up in there. it was a competitive fight

That's what I thought when it happened, and it's what I still think now. I never found this fight as mysterious as, for example, Ali-Liston II.

Yeah its strange. All we know is that at the time he was not really losing, which only makes it stranger. One theory is that he pulled a Jack Johnson. When johnson knew he was not going to be able to continue due to the weather (the sun in Cuba) and his own lack of conditioning for the fight he sort of cleared the galley (asked his wife to leave) and went down. I do believe that against Willard in this fight he was actually winning, but the steam engine ran out of coal!
