  • Did Frazier deserve the 3rd Ali fight

I have a question for the guys that were around back then, and saw the events of the 70s heavyweight division unfold..

question is- Did frazier deserve a third fight with Ali, especially since it was a world title fight..

In the internet age, i can see this fight being proclaimed as cherrypick by ali, since the 2nd fight wasnt very competitive or exciting compared to part 1..

Frazier didnt have any notable wins after foreman loss that could propel him back into the rankings..
Since losing to foreman and ali 2, in clear fashion, why did frazier get the 3rd ali fight...
Do you consider it a cherrypick, money fight, that just happened to turn into a classic fight..

Leading up to the 3rd meeting, what did frazier do to warrant a 3rd fight...

And im not trying to downplay frazier,, just want to know from guys that actually watch it all unfold, if frazier deserved a title shot or was it just a cash grab for team ali, that thought frazier was finished

The reffing in the second fight was as atrocious as maidana mayweather ii. No, it was worse.

That is true. Tony Perez was terrible. Joe was almost literally wearing Ali's glove on the back of his head.

Having been around at the time, I can assure you that nobody considered this a cherrypick for Ali. Frazier's easy win over Quarry was considered more than adequate to qualify him for the rubber match. This match was highly anticipated everywhere.

I can't say that I was a fan at the time or even alive lol. But he stopped Quarry and Ellis, that is quite the qualification for the shot against Ali imo and when you bring in the fact that there would be a ton of money to be made whenever those two fought, it made even more sense.

ok, thanks for the input... Do you think foreman deserved a rematch more than frazier???

hindsight is always 20/20 so im glad you were actually there and can provide insight

Was the quarry fight that big of a win,,, it hardly ever gets mentioned,, where was quarry at in his career when he fought frazier?

Sorry to ask so many questions, just trying to get some first hand knowledge

                Champ: Muhammad Ali
                1. George Foreman
                2. Joe Frazier
                3. Ron Lyle
                4. Oscar Bonavena
                5. Joe Bugner
                6. Ken Norton
                7. Jerry Quarry
                8. Chuck Wepner
                9. Henry Clark
                10. Larry Middleton

Having a look at The Ring ratings at the end of 1974, the only fight we urged for in ’75 was the re-match Ali vs Foreman, while remaining names didn’t look that exciting (not against Ali, anyway).
Because most of us – and Ali’s camp – believed Frazier was washed up. How wrong we were.

And there will always be this unanswered question:

If Futch had been just a tiny bit more cynical, and sent Frazier in for a 15th round, would Ali have stayed in his corner?
He was ready to give in. Well, had he? ...

That is a rare moment that totally changes the legacy of boxing...

If Frazier had won,, who would he face during his next run, and who would beat him... Would they make an Ali 4? probably a foreman fight, but does Frazier and his handlers avoid big george... Fascinating scenarios to think of
